Holiday Traditions for Agnostics and New Thought Folk

The Christmas season has always been a particularly special time in my life having grown up in a Catholic household. The depth of the holidays intesified for me upon learning of it's pagan elements, like the significance of the fir trees and celebrating the return of the Sun after dark days. As individuals who identify with New Thought, agnostic, or non-denominational beliefs, the holiday season offers a unique opportunity to create meaningful traditions that align with our spiritual and philosophical perspectives. Rather than adhering to conventional customs, we can infuse our celebrations with purpose, mindfulness, and a deep sense of connection. In this article, we'll explore ways in which New Thought practitioners and non-denominational individuals can craft traditions that resonate with their values and contribute to a more fulfilling holiday experience for the whole family. Read more

Raising Children Amidst Relatives Of Different Faiths With the holidays already back again, we look forward to seeing loved ones. Those with large extended families will find that in order to maintain good relationships with many of their family members, they’ll need to have a very open heart and mind due to differing faiths and lifestyles. Raising children amidst relatives of different faiths, especially when certain traditions are central to seasonal get-togethers, can present delicate situations to navigate. While I... Read more

Love and Marriage but Different Faiths

I am confident that many other married couples are much like my husband and me. I'm the spiritual, sensitive artist and he is the tough atheist athlete. We have had our arguments but have also grown a lot as individuals because of the worldviews we've opened each other's minds to. Opposites truly do attract each other and can lead to fulfilling, exciting and refreshing adventures as a couple. It's needless to say, that there are some profound challenges that come with choosing a life-partner who holds different convictions about life, death and the overall human condition as it pertains to religion, or spirituality. If you find yourself falling for someone of a different faith or of no faith, this is for you. Read more

The Intersection of Religion and Education

Although my baby is but several months old, I am already considering the type of education we'd like her to have. The thoughts about how to guide her in learning to navigate her spirtuality flood these considerations, however I currently lean in the direction of public schooling. It seems to make the most sense to protect her from indoctrination that may occur in private school, but we have been riding a thought pendulum because I went to private school and this leaves me feeling some obligation to seeing to it she gets the best education possible - regardless of whether it is private or public. One thing is for sure. This is a topic that plagues many parents. I am baring my struggle with it right here in hopes that others can feel validated as they figure this out themselves. Read more

Parenting and the Pros and Cons of Organized Religion

Last updated on: September 29, 2023 at 10:48 am   By Robzie Trulove

I remember a teacher I adored in middle school blowing all our minds with a simple answer to the question, “What about the other religions?" For 6th graders who had been in Catholic private school our whole lives, this was a pivotal moment. It was a significant moment for me and I sit here decades later, recapitulating the crucial message delivered by this insightful educator. Catholicism is a monolithic organized religion, and looking back, our teacher’s interpretation of this faith was quite different to say the least. Today, I think of her while I explore parenting and consider the pros and cons of organized religion. Read more

Navigating Growth and Grief of Both Pregnancy and Leaving Religion

Pregnancy and Beholding the Phenomenon of Becoming As I write these words, I think of other new mothers-to-be like me. Pregnancy is a rollercoaster of excitement and less happy emotions. I rub my round belly and feel the subtle movements of my baby. She is due in just weeks. I acknowledge the fear and anxiety that comes along with pregnancy. I sense the guilt that follows the fear. However, I try to be present. I try to behold this sacred... Read more
