Happy St. Patty’s Day friends! Are you geared up for parades and all of the pinching shenanigans? Or are you like me, and it’s just kind of another day? While I may not deck my home in shamrocks, leprechauns, and rainbows, I do add touches of green when Spring comes in. Today, I want to show you how I styled my Farmhouse Spring Mantel and easy ways you can decorate your fireplace.
Last week, you had some sneak peeks of my fireplace when I shared our (still in progress) makeover. And you had a few glimpses of how I styled it on my Spring Home Love blog hop. One question I get asked a lot is how to pull it all together. Here are 5 easy steps to make your mantel a showpiece.
Shop from your home
This is my first step to all my home decorating tricks. Mainly because I’m a proud, badge wearing cheapskate, but also because it, most likely, already matches your color scheme you have in your home.
Have you noticed that you are drawn toward what you love? If you love lots of color or modern shapes and lines, chances are you buy items that reflect those loves.
For me, I crush on black – it’s not just scattered around my home, but it’s even in my wardrobe. I love the simplicity of that dark neutral and how it pops off my light decor. I also love to incorporate family heirlooms in my decor. Most of my vintage decor have come from my or my husband’s family.
Once you have your pieces you collected from shopping from your home, then you can draw from those items for inspiration. Shopping from my house, I gathered a mirror, old bottles, driftwood candlesticks and tarnished silver pitchers. One item I purchased for my Spring home tour is the big medallion over my sofa, so I wanted to compliment that with how I styled my mantel. I took my black mirror from my dresser in our bedroom and it fit perfectly for my Farmhouse Spring Mantel.
Find a color scheme or theme
Once I set the black mirror in place, I looked at my other items I gathered to get one, cohesive look. A few of my items didn’t work, so away they went. Don’t be afraid to try pairing items that you aren’t sure if they’ll work or not. I was positive that tarnished silver and driftwood would look horrible, but once I set them in place – it looked perfect.
After trial and error, I had a theme of glass, silver and driftwood and my colors were black, tans, and whites.
Don’t be afraid to DIY
My mirror was just blah. I needed something hanging from it, but couldn’t decide on what would tie it all together. I thought a driftwood wreath would look neat, and I searched on Amazon and found this one:
It was beautiful, but measured too big for what I was hoping for, so I went with option B and decided to make one myself. I purchased a bag of driftwood pieces and a small grapevine wreath and hot glued the pieces to the wreath.

I added tiny touches of green moss here and there to help it look Spring-y.
Then I hung it from the mirror with an old ribbon I found in a craft box. The ribbon softened the black to add that farmhouse spring mantel look I wanted.

Use Faux Greenery
I LOVE getting flowers. They are beautiful and smell so good, but I have to admit that I think they are a HUGE waste of money. I’ve actually asked my husband to stop buying them for me. I’d rather he take the money and buy me a plant that I can clip fresh flowers from year after year, than a one time pop of color that dies. So I always go for the fake stuff. It lasts longer and is more economical because you can reuse them year after year.
I have four different sets of flowers and greenery in my silver pitchers and here’s a trick to have them not look so fake. Go for the good stuff. Don’t get the cheap stuff or they’ll look horrible. Real flowers are pricey for a reason.
Here’s another tip: Clip them apart, and arrange them like real flowers. You know how they come in a big bunch? Just take some wire clippers and snip them into individual stems. That way you have more freedom to place them where they will look the best.
Add some whimsy – a bit of your personality
I think this is the most important thing about styling your home. If you are a minimalist, keep your decor simple. If you collect something, add a touch of it here or there. My grandmother collected ceramic clowns and when I went to her home, there was one every so often in her decor. Yes she had a curio cabinet full of them, but why cordon them off to one location? She placed them where she would enjoy them.
What joy is there in your home if you look around and don’t see what you love?
Since I love vintage elements, I had to add my glass bottles and tobacco baskets.
I put tiny paper flowers I found at Hobby Lobby into the glass bottles to give it a spring look.
