There’s no denying that there is power in how we dress and make ourselves up. We can create myriad impressions as well as influence the way people view us depending on the clothes, makeup, and attitudes we choose to wear and how we choose to wear them. Not only is what you wear a reflection of your own personal style, it communicates to other people messages about who you are. There is great power here just waiting to be wielded.

The clothes we wear and the makeup we use hold so much power, even just over ourselves. Certain outfits make us feel confident, or sexy, or unique. Some are comfortable and cozy but also cute. Sometimes, conversely, there are outfits we choose that don’t fit us well at all and reflect a desire to hide or showcase an insecurity that needs healing. They may even reflect parts of ourselves that we have outgrown.

I didn’t give this a lot of thought until after I went through my divorce. One day when I was watching Queer Eye on Netflix I heard Tan France say, “There is a higher power. It’s fashion.” and I realized that there was a whole lot more I could be doing for myself.

This was an entire aspect of my life that for many years went unacknowledged. I didn’t put a lot of thought into my outfit choices unless it was a special occasion. I wasn’t in a position where I felt comfortable buying anything new. It was all quite unfortunate considering how strongly Venus influences my chart. So I started to revamp my wardrobe and makeup choices to fit who I am and what I want for myself now with the intention that these items assist in the underlying magical work I was doing to get what I want.

Exploring this part of who I am also opened fresh opportunities for me and reconnected me to my creative drive. It became an integral part of my self-care that has paid off in dividends.

Influencing and Free Will

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with magick. Everything. Magick is influencing. No matter what spell you do, you are influencing others. There is no way not to influence the free will of others when doing magick. If you do a spell to get a job you’re influencing the hiring manager. If you do a spell to attract a lover you are influencing someone who fits your requirements (or someone specific, if you have a person in mind).

We are always doing what we can to influence the free will of others in mundane ways to get what we want, as well. Even if you don’t use magick to get a job, you might highlight your skillset as what sets you apart from other candidates, or choose a certain outfit for your interview that you think will give the best impression. Maybe you didn’t use magick to land a date but I bet you work your own personal charms if you really like the person, putting your best foot forward. All of these activities are influencing.

What Is Glamour Magick, Exactly?

Glamour is, quite simply, an enchantment. You can use it to highlight certain qualities in yourself or create a facade to bring about the results you want. You can also use it to mask certain qualities, for better or for worse. I once encountered a man who had a glamour. By all outward appearances he seemed harmless, but anytime I knew I had to be around him I would feel sick in my stomach and a sense of foreboding. He was an expert at hiding what he didn’t want people to see, as predatory people often are. This is a form of glamour.

Sometimes, masking glamour can help save us from danger. Sometimes you need a glamour of invisibility to get out of a terrible situation- in which case you are using this magick to attract safety. There are also tons of fun ways to work this magick. You don’t necessarily need anything outside of yourself to project a glamour, you can often do it all with attitudes you cultivate within.

Ways To Utilize Glamour Magick with Intention

Some people create whole personas to empower themselves or reach an end goal. Maybe “regular” you is a self-saboteur who can’t not doubt their own spellwork, so you create a special confident persona for spell-casting. Choosing a certain look for this persona strengthens it in addition to other workings. Fake it till you make it is a real thing. I mean, yes of course do the important shadow work, but if creating a persona will help you along the way, use it.

Yes, you can also do extra things like enchant your makeup though this isn’t exactly a glamour unless worked in a particular way. You need to know exactly what you want to accomplish and how you want to influence someone, and then you can work your glamour into the entire ritual of getting ready. Think about what you want to accomplish/influence before you pick out an outfit, and then reaffirm those intentions as and after you dress. See yourself in the mirror the way you want to be seen. This requires great concentration and can produce great results.
