LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

BIG Idea: The church is the greatest movement in human history.

Have you ever wanted to be a part of a movement? A movement is a purpose or cause much greater than yourself. Have you ever looked around at the monotony of your life and secretly wished for something more? You’re not alone.

Everyone has an innate pull within them to be a part of something greater than themselves. That’s why we go to sporting stadiums filled with tens of thousands of people, hoping to get caught up in the euphoria of a moment much bigger than ourselves. That’s why we identify with recent movements like the Arab Spring or Occupy Wall Street. While we may not agree with their politics, something inside us respects their ability to come together and achieve an outcome far greater than one person could do alone.

We all want to be a part of a movement, but what movement is there in our little corner of the planet? Only the greatest movement in human history! 2000 years ago, a Jewish teacher stood on a dusty hillside with a scraggly collection of fishermen, tax collectors, and former prostitutes. They were a ‘miscellaneous’ group if there ever was one. This group of people did not have power, wealth, or influence. And yet they would ignite the greatest movement in human history.

Here’s how the Bible records it: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). This simple statement launched a movement that has forever changed the course of human history. It’s the mandate given to people who partner with God to redeem people from every tribe and people and nation and language. It’s the marching orders of the movement known as the church that has guided its history for over 2000 years.

Many times we in the church miss out on the movement because we’ve forgotten our purpose. The church is not a social club. We’re not a babysitting service for kids. We’re not a Bible-education institution. We as the church are a part of the world-wide movement coursing through human history that has changed and is changing the eternal destinies of billions of people.

Are you looking for a movement? Do you want to be a part of something bigger than yourself? Are you searching for significance? Look no further than the church. The church is the greatest movement in human history. If you want to be a part of something big, get involved the church. You’ll find the significance you’ve been looking for.

QUESTION: How is your church a part of the worldwide movement of God?
