Over the weekend, a horrific bus accident killed three adults and an unborn child. The youth group from Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Indianapolis was merely a mile from home after spending the week at a youth camp up in Michigan. While navigating the off ramp, the brakes failed on the bus, sending it into the median and causing it to flip over. The youth pastor, the youth pastor’s wife, her unborn child, and a mother of five were all killed. The youth pastor and his wife also had a two-year-old who was injured, but he was later released from the hospital. He’ll never know his mom and dad.

As a former youth pastor, this was always my worst nightmare: tragedy striking on a trip I was in charge of. I’ve driven a 40 passenger bus when a tire blew on a bridge, sending a bus full of teenagers into the guardrail. I still shudder when I think of it today. As a pastor, I hurt for the church as they grieve this incredibly terrible loss.

The kicker is that the youth pastor was the senior pastor’s son. So while the senior pastor has to walk the church through this horrific tragedy, he also has to deal with his personal grief of losing a child and grandchild. This church has been heavy on my heart all weekend. Please join me in praying for Colonial Hills Baptist Church and Pastor Charles Phelps.
