tragic explanations

Last updated on: July 25, 2012 at 7:11 am   By David Hayward

I have no idea in the face of such tragedy. Such mystery. But we could keep our mouths shut for a while. You know, Job’s comforters were doing great… until they opened their mouths. You can own the original drawing of this cartoon, or you can buy a print of it. Read more

short people high knobs

Last updated on: July 24, 2012 at 7:47 am   By David Hayward

The church can be accused of false advertising when it says it welcomes all but makes it impossible for some to join or stay or participate. If the church is worried about numbers and is doing anything to grow, including making false claims, then it needs to get over it. Just admit you don’t welcome short people. Don’t worry! There’s plenty of tall people out there who don’t believe in shortness and will join your exclusive group. Just look at... Read more

the art of spiritual direction

Last updated on: July 23, 2012 at 6:57 pm   By David Hayward

This is Sister Marie. She is a nun and spiritual director in a Roman Catholic monastery in Canada. I had the incredible pleasure of visiting her last weekend. It was the first time I’d seen her in 25 years. Around 27 years ago I experienced a profound spiritual crisis. I desperately needed help. Somehow I came across Thomas Merton’s Seven Story Mountain and immediately knew I needed a spiritual director. I clandestinely researched high and low until someone told me... Read more

why it is hard to leave the church

Last updated on: July 22, 2012 at 6:52 pm   By David Hayward

I’ve left the church. Many times. The last time I left was over 2 years ago. It was painful every time. Here’s just a few of the reasons why it was so difficult to leave. fear: When I left the church, a profound cloud of fear enveloped me: “What have I done?” No matter how much you rationalize your decision, the years and years of indoctrination collect to shout out jeers and threats for your selfishness, stupidity, sinfulness, and shortsightedness.... Read more

Viktor Frankl believed in others

Last updated on: July 19, 2012 at 6:56 pm   By David Hayward

It was a pleasure to watch this video of Viktor Frankl, a man I highly respect. His book Man’s Search For Meaning is still one of the most important books in my library. I know this flies in the face of a lot of theology out there, including my own in the past. But I’ve changed. This needs to be heard in this day of suspicion, derision and division. Check out my online gallery full of art at good prices:... Read more
