I want to thank one of my readers, Gary, for giving me the idea for this cartoon! Imagine! Imagine if everyone’s rights were recognized. Imagine if everyone had equal rights, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation… Imagine! Because imagination is where it begins. SHOP Read more

everything has a positive spin
Last updated on: March 12, 2013 at 7:59 am By David Hayward
You can give practically anything a positive spin. I’ve used these spins. They’ve been used on me. This is why I am extra sensitive to abusive, manipulative and controlling behavior and speech. I’ve given it and received it. We have to be very, very aware at how pervasive the attitude of control and the language of power permeates our speech. Maybe not obviously, but if we read between the lines it can often be detected. Did you know that there... Read more

no pity party
Last updated on: March 11, 2013 at 7:58 am By David Hayward
Well, the rant is already embedded in the cartoon. You get my meaning. I get served pity every day. I don’t want it. And I don’t need it. Actually, I’m healthier and happier than I’ve ever been. For example, some people have a misconception about the membership of my other site, The Lasting Supper. They think the hundreds of members there are composed of people wounded by the church. Sure, we’ve all been hurt by the church at some time... Read more

Jonah with a more modern attitude
Last updated on: March 10, 2013 at 8:31 am By David Hayward
I have the utmost respect for the Jonah story. I love it. Why? Because it was the first biblical story that I came to believe wasn’t literal. Karl Barth said, “I take the Bible too seriously to read it literally.” The myth is a great vehicle for communicating what extreme measures grace will take to include people. Read more

inspirational annoyance
Last updated on: March 9, 2013 at 7:53 pm By David Hayward
I love being inspired. I love inspiring people. But I also like to be able to process my struggles. Usually out loud. With friends. Struggle and suffering and sadness and sorrow are real. It has to be processed. You can pretend it’s not there but that doesn’t mean it isn’t. Some have learned the art of processing quickly. Turning things around rapidly. But they still have to process the suffering. Read more

who asks the questions around here?
Last updated on: March 8, 2013 at 8:01 pm By David Hayward
If you haven’t seen the film The Master, I recommend you do. It very cleverly exposes the tight control charismatic leaders can have on their people, and how they can react with emotional violence when questioned. Heck, I didn’t have to watch a movie to understand this dynamic or know it first hand. I’ve seen it many times. Here’s a clue: when you ask a question and it gets an emotionally aggressive response, that is a sign you have struck... Read more

i eat questions for breakfast
Last updated on: March 8, 2013 at 8:09 am By David Hayward
It takes courage to ask tough questions. First of all it takes courage with yourself… to be honest with yourself. Then, secondly, it takes courage with others because thinking independently is risky. I think most of you who read my blog are acutely aware of this, having learned from experience. Be a champion! Never stop raising the question. Ask the questions that need to be asked! Eat questions for breakfast! MY PRINTS and MY ORIGINALS Read more

who’s in who’s image?
Last updated on: March 7, 2013 at 6:17 pm By David Hayward
The number one commandment is against idolatry because it’s our number one problem. And it begins in the mind. A thought of God is formed and we bow down before it and worship it. The word is not the thing. The thought is not the thing. Imagine that! Read more
