would you just like to be tolerated?

Last updated on: March 27, 2013 at 8:26 am   By David Hayward

This is another cartoon addressing marriage equality and LGBTQ themes. Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. Equality is more than tolerance. Tolerance means putting up with something, enduring it, allowing it to be present in your world. It’s something that’s done from a position of power, from a position of superiority to that which is tolerated. We are now realizing that this posture is very very problematic. You can observe a prime example of this problematic posture in Rick... Read more

new Sophia drawing “Deep”

Last updated on: March 26, 2013 at 7:36 pm   By David Hayward

One of my favorite verses in the bible is Psalm 42:7… “Deep calls to deep at the sound of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have rolled over me.” Sophia, like all of us, is always invited to go deeper. But because of all her trials, she feels she has no choice. The mystical creatures, the loons, provide wise guidance, sleek assurance and a deep safety for her. The creatures of the deep rescue her. I remember meeting... Read more

Rob Bell’s Hell

Last updated on: March 26, 2013 at 4:51 pm   By David Hayward

I did this cartoon when Rob Bell first came out with Love Wins. I was amazed by how much press he got, including negative press. I thought of Bell and how much stress and strain that would cause a person. Then he comes out with another book, What We Talk About When We Talk About God, and he gets the same thing all over again. Not surprised. But it is still a fascinating subject for me observing all the activity... Read more

by the book or by the heart

Last updated on: March 26, 2013 at 12:12 pm   By David Hayward

I actually remember the day when I realized that books may inform my life, but they don’t have to rule it. It wasn’t a forced or coerced decision. It was more like a revelation. It was one of the most liberating moments of my life. Read more

does the law have power over love?

Last updated on: March 26, 2013 at 8:04 am   By David Hayward

I’m continuing my marriage equality and LGBTQ themed cartoons this week because today and tomorrow the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in two cases regarding same-sex marriage… one concerning California’s Proposition 8 and the other the Defense of Marriage Act. Of course the law has no control over who we love. But it can make it inconvenient. Or convenient. William Stringfellow, who was in my opinion one of the most important American theologians (Karl Barth agreed), had a lot... Read more

the grave gavel and same sex marriage

Last updated on: March 25, 2013 at 5:36 pm   By David Hayward

Several years ago I worked in the States for a while. My wife’s American but I still needed a worker’s visa. But when I lost my job, there we were stuck with a house and van that we’d bought. Lisa and the kids booted it back to Canada to recover while I stayed down in the States to sell the house and van. Officially I was now there illegally. It was a very strange feeling being alive and well but... Read more

marriage equality won’t go away

Last updated on: March 25, 2013 at 6:56 am   By David Hayward

Tomorrow and Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in two cases regarding same-sex marriage… one concerning California’s Proposition 8 and the other the Defense of Marriage Act. Significant! Marriage equality is not going away. I’m hopeful, even convinced, that it is coming. Soon. I’m speaking from Canada so for some of you I live in the future. Some would see this advancement as a terrible regression. They would think of the Noah and the flood. They would believe... Read more

God versus Science

Last updated on: March 24, 2013 at 8:09 am   By David Hayward

This cartoon was inspired by Neil Tyson’s famous quote: “God is an ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance that’s getting smaller and smaller and smaller as time goes on.” You know he said this in response to the naive statement believers often make: “You can’t understand it- God did it.” I agree with Tyson: using belief as an excuse for ignorance is a dying maneuver. Hiding from the rising tide of scientific discovery behind faith is doomed. Actually this cartoon represents... Read more

church growth is sexy

Last updated on: March 23, 2013 at 4:25 pm   By David Hayward

When I pastored a local congregation I was well aware of the fact that most often the visitors were disaffected members from other churches. We created our own disaffected members as well that went elsewhere. It’s an elaborate exchange program. Or, in keeping with the analogy, swapping program. A real swinging time! Once a whole bunch of people left our church and started their own. Others left and populated other churches. One church got so many of our members that they... Read more
