Sweet Weekend
Last updated on: August 16, 2010 at 9:51 am By Kristina ElSayed
After a busy week sewing and painting, along with general family keeping and the beginning of Ramadan Fasting, Friday night brought on a baking frenzy that lasted just shy of 2 hours. I made German Chocolate Cupcakes for the neighbors. Yes, it was a store-bought mix and frosting, but I tweaked the cake a little by using an extra egg and milk instead of water. That made them super light and airy. Shhh! Don’t tell anyone. Then we decided to make... Read more

Bookmarks for the Future
Last updated on: August 12, 2010 at 9:11 am By Kristina ElSayed
I’ve started a file of bookmarks to sites that sell cute and trendy modest clothing so that when my ladies get older and start needing clothing that I can’t find at the local Macys I have the info. So far I have :The Rebirth of Chic and Shukr. I also have Coolibar for bathing suits. Where do you find your modest clothing? Read more

Turkish Delights
Last updated on: August 10, 2010 at 8:32 am By Kristina ElSayed
The first Ramadan in our new home, our neighbors introduced us to the tradition of sharing food with the Muslim families closest to you. Every couple of days, we would send the posse with a dish to their house, and then a few days later a dish would come back to us. This lasted all the way through the Fasting, ending the night before Eid. Then our neighbors moved, and eventually the home was inhabited once again. Spring of 2009,... Read more

Racism in My Life
Last updated on: December 19, 2020 at 11:54 am By Kristina ElSayed
Have you ever had to deal with Racism on a personal level? Had you ever, in the furthest reaches of your imagination, thought that by being with the man you love, you would have to deal with people hating you because of your skin? About a month ago, I ‘overheard’ someone who I am acquainted with, make a racial slur in regards to a White/Christian woman who is married to an Arab/Muslim man. My acquaintance is a highly educated, well written,... Read more

What’s This About?
Last updated on: August 4, 2010 at 10:29 am By Kristina ElSayed
The other day we were watching ‘This Old House’ wherein they have a segment in which they try to guess what a crazy looking tool thing is used for and why. That got me thinking about all the new stuff that entered my life after meeting Khaled, marrying Khaled, and shopping in Middle Eastern shops and learning how to cook Egyptian foods. Today, I give you this! What do you think it’s used for and why? If you have something... Read more

The Muslim Next Door: The Qur’an, the Media and that Veil Thing
Last updated on: December 19, 2020 at 11:52 am By Kristina ElSayed
What I’m Reading. So, since my last major post last week, quite a few things have happened. First, we were graciously featured by my long-time friend, Magda on her parenting blog AskMoxie. Magda and I have known each other since waaaay back when, and she’s been a mentoring guide in the startup of My Islamic Life. So, *hugs* Magda! A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I stopped off at the local library to pick up Nurture Shock and another book that I wanted to... Read more

The Call to Prayer
Last updated on: July 30, 2010 at 10:14 am By Kristina ElSayed
Today is Friday, and it’s the day of Jummah prayer. I was reading this morning and I came across this section in the book where the author explains what the call to prayer means. Then I remembered explaining this same thing to my mom last week when I took her to prayer. Before I get the pancakes made, I wanted to share this with you. Allahu Akbar! (God is most great.) Allahu Akbar! (God is most great.) Ash-haduan la illaha il-Allah!... Read more

Secrecy Is Isolating
Last updated on: December 19, 2020 at 11:50 am By Kristina ElSayed
Yesterday, I was listening to one of the many podcasts I subscribe, when one of the contributors had this to say: “Secrecy, is isolating. What if you couldn’t find anybody to talk with or good resources to explore, before taking the jump?” Now, the podcast was on a completely different topic, but this statement resounded with me. What if you had someone in a relationship like yours that you could have talked to before getting married? I remember after getting... Read more

Changed the Comment Settings
Last updated on: July 21, 2010 at 9:12 am By Kristina ElSayed
I went through the comment settings and fixed it so you don’t have to log a name and email every time you want to say something. It would still be good to know who you are, so make sure you sign your name. I still have to approve them all, because I don’t really want hate mail or spam. That’s not why we are here, and I don’t want you to have to read that. Salam Read more

We Made Mashi
Last updated on: July 20, 2010 at 10:34 am By Kristina ElSayed
So last week, Sunday, Khaled and I were looking through the grocery ads and I found cabbage as the loss leader for the week. To me, cabbage in the winter means corned beef and cabbage, and summer means hobo dinner and mashi! Maybe it’s spelled Mahshi. I’m not sure, but for those of you who don’t know Mashi, if you are married to an Egyptian, you’ve had it at sometime at some relative’s house. If you had Mashi Cromb it was vegetarian... Read more
