On the same day that the SCOTUS upheld the Muslim Ban, my daughter showed me the Adam Levine video from ‘Girls Like You.’
The two don’t seem to be related in any way, shape or form.

We had just listened to the song on the radio. The lyrics don’t give any clue as to why this is remarkable.
Spent 24 hours
I need more hours with you
You spent the weekend
Getting even, ooh ooh
We spent the late nights
Making things right, between us
But now it’s all good baby
Roll that Backwood baby
And play me close‘Cause girls like you
Run around with guys like me
‘Til sundown, when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahGirls like you
Love fun, yeah me too
What I want when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahYeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahYeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahI spent last night
On the last flight to you
Took a whole day up
Trying to get way up, ooh ooh
We spent the daylight
Trying to make things right between us
And now it’s all good baby
Roll that Backwood baby
And play me close‘Cause girls like you
Run around with guys like me
‘Til sundown, when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahGirls like you
Love fun, yeah me too
What I want when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahYeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahYeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahI need a girl like you, yeah yeah
I need a girl like you
Maybe it’s 6:45
Maybe I’m barely alive
Maybe you’ve taken my shit for the last time, yeah
Maybe I know that I’m drunk
Maybe I know you’re the one
Maybe I’m thinking it’s better if you drive‘Cause girls like you
Run around with guys like me
‘Til sundown, when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeah‘Cause girls like you
Run around with guys like me
‘Til sundown, when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahGirls like you
Love fun, yeah me too
What I want when I come through
I need a girl like you, yeah yeahYeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah

The video reminds me a bit of Faith by George Michael. Him singing with a bunch of well known, famous women. The difference is that the women in Adam’s video are not there because they are beautiful models, they are there because they have something to say. This is a celebration of women breaking the mold and making change.
And Amani Al-Khatahtbeh from Muslim Girl AND Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar were both featured in the video, dancing with Adam Levine.
You heard me. 2 women, wearing hijab, IN A MUSIC VIDEO.
This is why it’s a big deal.
Bad, bad things are happening all over the world. I know that. Awful, horrific, gut wrenching things are happening in the States. I don’t have to talk about it. You know it. I’m focusing on making change, fighting back by working towards building bridges and forging relationships. I’m also fighting back by showing you when I see that Muslim women are being shown as Whole People. Not a caricature or a trope.
So, here you go. Enjoy.
