It seems to me that the 2016 election will be one of those defining moments in history, much like Pearl Harbor, or 9/11 or Rabaa.

There will be the time before…and the aftermath.

The United States will be forever changed. The world as we know it will be forever changed. Our children and grandchildren will ask us why things are the way they are and we will point back to that specific incident in time as the turning point.

For my family, 9/11 was a turning point. Rabaa was another turning point, and this last Friday was another.

After 9/11, we had to be more vigilant about our surroundings, about our charities, about our travel plans, about our friends and even our daily activities. I can look into someone’s eyes and know that we are not welcome. I didn’t know that before 9/11.

August 13, 2013 at the Massacre at Rabaa al-Adawiya, my husband’s brother was murdered.

On Friday, January 27th, 45* issued a travel ban on Muslims. Yes, I’ve read the wording of the ban, where it specifies things and criteria for who is effected, but it won’t take much now for those parameters to change from Green Card Muslims, to Naturalized Citizens and then any Muslims. Will January 27, 2017 be the day that marks that turning point where my children cannot travel outside of the United States?

For many people, there is a defining moment in their religious journey that gives them that touch-point; the before, and the after. Before that moment, they are unsure of their journey, their purpose, or even if there is a God.

The 3rd and final episode in season 2 of Morgan Freeman’s documentary, The Story of God delves into the search for proof that God exists. Mr. Freeman discusses this proof with people from Christianity, Buddism, Etha and Islamic religions. This proof comes from an internal verbal/non-verbal message (Christianity) to specific meditations (Buddism), ongoing divination (Etha) and the written word of God (Islam).

The Story of God; God Spoke to Me

I watched this episode unfold, people discussing their defining moments with Mr. Freeman and in each instance; you can see a deep, profound source of peace. It winds its way through the commonality of each religion; the proof that they seek just comes in a different vehicle.

Each time the proof of God is acknowledged, it is a turning point of some magnitude. It could be smaller, like getting a message that you will be able to find a home in the next week, or that you are making the right choice to make that purchase. Or it could be a larger, life-altering message telling you to change your job or if you are being called to another path.

There is proof of God in all of us, if we are willing to look for it. – Morgan Freeman

Those of us who are present and observant participants in our spiritual journey acknowledge that, those turning points in history often coincide with turning points in our religious journeys. It is important to understand that no matter how you communicate with the greater power that envelops us, you are not alone in your search for that touchstone of proof.

You can find season one of The Story of God on the National Geographic website or you can purchase the entire season on DVD through Amazon.
