If there was ever a day when America deserved to have every one of its flags lowered in grief, it’s today.

As I watched the news in utter disbelief last night, seeing the announcement of America’s new leader for the next 4 years, I realized that there’s been a massive murder attempt… One of the biggest ever in this country’s history.

It won’t be called what it is on mass media outlets, but I acknowledge it as a murder attempt. So I’m doing my duty by reporting it here. A shameful number of people have abused a right and privilege that this country gave them, and engaged in a brutal attack; they have used what has been called their civic responsibility to try to kill Liberty and Justice — the very pillars upon which our nation stands.

I don’t believe they’re dead, though, so I won’t yet mourn their loss. There is still time to save them. But it’s not going to be easy, especially when the only weapon we have do defend them is being pried away from us: Hope.

They have used what has been called their civic responsibility to try to kill Liberty and Justice — the very pillars upon which our nation stands.

Hope is what is snatched from me, when I realize that I feel unsafe to go outside in my own homeland — the country that I was born in. When I contemplate how my husband, who immigrated to America at the age of 14 days, would have been refused to enter, had this country been in the state it has chosen to be in today. When I watch that same man selflessly serving the people of this country as a doctor, though today he does so with more cynicism and bitterness and pain. When I think about his parents and my own, who gave up the comfortable lives they had to come to this country and achieve the American Dream. Who helped build the fabric of our society with their blood, sweat, and tears. When I imagine my friends and co-workers who will now feel oppressed and afraid, because their “crime” is being, or just looking, Muslim. Or because they are not White, straight, upper middle class, and U.S. born. When I realize that our diversity is now being perceived as this country’s flaw, rather than its beauty.

We are more what this country stands for, than they are.

They tried taking Hope away from us, but we will cling onto it with every bit of strength that we have. They tried to kill Liberty and Justice, but we will defend them with our every breath. We are more what this country stands for, than they are.

Because we remember what they don’t: United we stand, divided we fall. And we have chosen to stand, and remain standing, united.

“Instead of giving in to cynicism and division, let’s move forward with the confidence and optimism and unity that define us as a people.” — President Barack Obama
