Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Sometimes you can’t help but have regrets in life, even if it’s just a passing thought- and it’s the worst feeling. Many times it’s the small stuff that you regret, if it led to bigger things. Everything ties together. Everything has consequences. You regret going to that place, trusting that person, saying those words, or wasting your time. You regret making that decision, sharing that secret, not standing your ground, or leaving things unsaid. And even if you don’t say it aloud, the thoughts still haunt you. That burning question still comes to you: what if?
But why are you asking? It happened for a reason, even if it seemed insignificant at the time. That’s the beauty of it: what you regret led you to where you are today. And if you’re not content with where you are now, rest assured that this is leading you to something greater, as well. Even the little things. Especially the little things. It’s not over yet.
That’s the beauty of it: what you regret led you to where you are today.
Oftentimes, these regretful moments are actually a sign and a mercy from the One in control. Because in the end, if it led to repentance and brought you closer to Allah, it was good for you. Period.
If that’s not what happened, you can still choose to change it now. Make a conscious decision to turn things around. Use the feelings and experiences you’re going through now to drive you to get closer to Him. It’s easy to turn away, but where will that take you? What have you gained from it in the past? Probably not inner contentment. Allah already knows what you did, and how you’re feeling; you just have to acknowledge that before Him with humility. Close the door to regret.
Because in the end, if it led to repentance and brought you closer to Allah, it was good for you. Period.
“Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.” [Qur’an 2:222]
