Have you ever paid attention to the fine print at the bottom of a packaged food item that claims to lower cholesterol or help you lose weight? Or those seven pages of fine print attached to a big contract that you’re about to sign? Or all those disclaimers at the end of a TV ad, which are being read much faster than the average person could possibly comprehend?

Everything has a catch; that’s the nature of this world. If it looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Yet just like the customer who willingly ignores the fine print and allows themselves to be deceived, we allow this imperfect world to trick us into thinking it’s much greater than it is. Everything in this duniya has an asterisk attached to it- perfect*; forever*; fulfilling*. We know that there’s no such thing as 100% satisfaction in this life, but we delude ourselves into thinking it’s possible, if we just keep trying. And in this endless pursuit of unattainable contentment, we’re distracted from what is perfect: Jannah. There’s no fine print there, no “catch,” no deception. Nothing is too good to be true. Nothing expires or wears out. Nothing breaks or dies.

We know that there’s no such thing as 100% satisfaction in this life, but we delude ourselves into thinking it’s possible, if we just keep trying.

“…You prefer the closer, inferior life of this world, (although) the Hereafter is better and longer lasting.” (87:16-17)
