(Urdu print at bottom)

Apne tukron ko simat kar,

Main Tere aage laai hoon.
Dhakke khaa kar, aakhir kaar
Main Tere saamne aayi hoon.

Bas ek javaab dede, Maalik,
Teri chaukhat par jab tak padi hoon:
Ye sab kaise aur kyun hua,
Aur in tukron ka main kya karoon?

Khula darvaaza intezaar karta raha,
Dhakke khaane ke baad kyun aayi hai tu?
Khubsoorat khaali haathon ko bharke,
In tukron ko apne saath laayi hai kyun?

Tu poochti hai, “Ye sab kaise hua?”
Kya duniya nahi thee tere dil ki aarzoo?
Duniya vaale to khud mohtaaji mein hain;
Faqeeron se bheek kyun maangti hai tu?

Tu poochti hai, “Ye sab kyun hua?”
Pehle tha tere andar aisa ikhlaas?
Toote baghair tujhe kaise hota
Apni haajat-mandi ka poora ehsaas?

Hum rehmatein baraste gaye;
Tu le kar Humse bhaagti gai-
Yeh bhool kar ke Humaari qurbat
Sab se azeem rehmat thi.

English Translation:

I’ve gathered my pieces together,
And brought them before You.
After being pushed around I’ve finally
Come in front of You.

Just give me one answer, Master,
While I’m lying here at Your threshold:
How and why did all this happen,
And what should I do with these pieces?

The open door was waiting for you,
Why did you only come after being pushed around?
Why did you fill those beautiful empty hands,
and bring these pieces along with you?

You ask, “How did all this happen?”
Wasn’t this world your heart’s desire?
The people of this world are, themselves, helpless;
Why do you beg from people who are (themselves) beggars?

You ask, “Why did all this happen?”
Was this kind of sincerity in you before?
Without breaking, how would you realize
The full extent of your own neediness?

We kept showering down blessings;
You kept taking them and running from Us-
Forgetting that closeness to Us
Was the greatest blessing of all.
