What about sexual education classes the church could offer? 2010-07-25T07:30:00-05:00 Natasha Helfer
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
I feel like the church REALLY needs to have some sort of optional classes on:
1) Sex- preparing the kids that have been taught NO NO No bad Bad Bad Dirty? and then one Night Okay, go ahead. I’m NO therapist but it seems to mess with SOME, most? of their heads (esp girls?).
2) What to expect. A lot of the virgins have no clue and are too ashamed to read or talk about likes dislikes and how it all ‘works”.
(I do wish parents would step up here, but that’s usually too awkward and you wouldn’t get too far).
2) When their husbands in fact DO look at pornography (usually accompanied with lies and secrecy?), they need to learn how they can deal with the situation.. not looking down on their spouse, dealing with their hurt and anger. And most of all that it has NOTHING to do with them, that they are beautiful, and of worth. Some take it SO personal, especially if it is an addiction. It’s hard for them to wrap their heads around it..?
Thoughts on classes?
I realize the church would never go for it. But I somehow feel it would be of great help to marriages. NO?
I agree that education is always an effective way to approach a myriad of issues/problems and/or normal developmental phases of life. I believe the church does offer and makes efforts to provide its members with many outlets for education – but not so much in the sexual arena. Some of this is to be understood, since sexuality is a sacred topic and can be extremely personal in nature – making many uncomfortable in a “classroom” type setting. The church does currently offer a class, Marriage and Family Relations, they make available to married couples – but its main focus is not centered on physical intimacy. They also offer A Parent’s Guide which gives parents some clear guidelines on teaching about sexuality.
However, since the church plays a significant role in stating what is or is not appropriate (with a heavier emphasis on what is not appropriate) sexual behavior, I agree that there should be more efforts made into normalizing and explaining the effects we see many members having either directly or somewhat related to their religious values. These needs and suggestions can and should be broached to our leaders. Thank you for your comments.
