Do You Really HAVE TO Vote?

Last updated on: October 10, 2016 at 10:49 am   By Monique Ocampo

I’ve been quiet about the election because I don’t like politics. I’m what you would call a swing voter. Back when I was in college, I voted for Obama because I blindly believed in what he was promising the American people. Four years later, voted Republican because I didn’t agree with Obama’s policies. Now here I am again four years later at another Presidential election. Voting for the lesser of two evils is sadly not an option for me anymore.... Read more

Kubo and the Two Strings: Collaboration with Catholic Girl Bloggin

Last updated on: September 30, 2016 at 9:58 am   By Monique Ocampo

If you must blink, do it now… Kubo is a young boy who lives with his sometimes-catatonic mother in a cave by the sea. Every day he walks down to the village and entertains the villagers by telling stories using origami that comes to life when he plays his shamisen (a Japanese three-stringed instrument). There is a catch to Kubo’s existence: He must never ever stay out after dark. He soon figures out the reason when he stays out... Read more

Dating and Other Things Catholic: Men of Christ Monday with John Antonio

Last updated on: September 12, 2016 at 11:29 am   By Monique Ocampo

John Antonio is a single Catholic professional who runs a medical ethics and professionalism program for resident physicians in the Texas Medical Center. He is also a lifestyle writer Catholicsingles.com and Catholic speaker. His new book Dating and Other Things Catholic: What Seminary Taught Me About Single Life is a smart, witty guide that I recommend to all millennials who are just starting out or for anyone who needs to start over from a major setback. 1) Where did the inspiration to... Read more

Uninvited’s Pros and Cons: A Book Review

Last updated on: September 8, 2016 at 11:41 am   By Monique Ocampo

I was definitely intrigued when I heard about Lysa TerKeurst’s latest book Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely. As someone who’s experienced rejection more times than I can count, I felt drawn to this book like a bee to honey. After reading through the book, I have to say that as a whole, there are a great many blessings that can be gained from reading it. Pros I related to most of the stories shared... Read more

The Idol of the Narrative

Last updated on: August 31, 2016 at 1:51 pm   By Monique Ocampo

In Strange Gods, Elizabeth Scalia went into detail on how we create idols out of our own egos and ideas. In Little Sins Mean a Lot, there’s a whole chapter about the dangers of clinging onto unhealthy narratives. As a writer, I pay a lot of attention to the narrative. Every person has their own version of what they think their lives were like and their perspectives of the people around them. For the longest time, I had this narrative in my head... Read more

Star Trek Beyond: An Interstellar Phenomenon

Last updated on: August 17, 2016 at 10:05 am   By Monique Ocampo

For those who don’t know, I am neither a die-hard fan of Star Wars nor of Star Trek. I am a Browncoat first, thank you very much. However, I do like the new Star Trek movie series, for the most part. The first one was a very accessible movie, as it introduced me to the world of Captain Kirk, Spock, and Starfleet. I didn’t like the second one as much, however, because it tried too hard to be (essentially) a remake of The Wrath of Khan. Star... Read more

St. John Vianney Novena Day 8

Last updated on: August 3, 2016 at 12:48 pm   By Monique Ocampo

O Holy Priest of Ars, a witness of your life made this magnificent praise of you: ‘We would have taken him for an angel in a mortal body.” You so edified others: the modesty and the exquisite purity radiated from your body. With such charm and with such enthusiasm you preached to others about these beautiful virtues which you said resembled the perfume of a vineyard in bloom. Please I beg you to join your entreaties to those of Mary... Read more

St. John Vianney Novena Day 7

Last updated on: August 2, 2016 at 3:26 pm   By Monique Ocampo

O Holy Priest of Ars, the infamous attacks of the devil which you had to suffer and the trials which disheartened you by fatigue would not make you give up the sublime task of converting souls. The devil came to you for many years to disturb your short rest but you won because of mortification and prayers. Powerful protector, you know the temptor’s desire to harm my baptized and believing soul. He would have me sin, by rejecting the Holy... Read more

St. John Vianney Novena Day 6

Last updated on: August 1, 2016 at 9:50 am   By Monique Ocampo

O Holy Priest of Ars, whose only comfort in this world was the real presence of Jesus in the tabernacle, was it not your great joy to distribute the Eucharist to the pilgrims who visited you? You refused Communion to the souls who refused to reform but to souls of goodwill you opened wide the doors of the Eucharistic Feast. You, who each day at Holy Mass received Holy Communion with great loves, give me some of your fervor. With... Read more

St. John Vianney Novena Day 5

Last updated on: July 31, 2016 at 10:00 am   By Monique Ocampo

O Holy Priest of Ars, you knew how important was a good confession for the Christian life. It was to procure the happy fruits of millions of souls that you agreed to be in an uncomfortable confessional, which was like a prison, up to 15 to 16 hours on certain days. I will try to develop the habit of frequent confession, to prepare properly each time and to have always regret for my sins, so that the grace of final... Read more
