<\/a><\/p>\n

At first there will be so much else happening you will not notice it is missing.
\nThen you will puzzle over the odd taste of a muffin,
\nthe strange lack of clean smells in the shower.<\/p>\n

Then it will be gone like a wall between you and the world.
\nIs the house on fire?
\nIs someone brewing coffee?
\nAre you wearing deodorant?
\nYou cannot tell.<\/p>\n

It is perhaps the subtlest sense to lose.
\nMy grandparents\u2019 house smelled like grapefruit.
\nCoffee shops smell like nostalgia and home and laptops and delight.
\nAutumn smells like leaves.
\nChildren smell like shampoo (sometimes).
\nAt the trendy hippie store with the handmade products, you used to smell all the soaps.<\/p>\n

You start asking people \u201cHow long did it take for you?\u201d
\nYou stop asking when someone tells you nine months.<\/p>\n

One day, a month later, it all descends again suddenly and without warning.
\nEverything is twice as strong and twice as precious.
\nCoffee is beautiful.
\nSoap is amazing.
\nPeople smell like people, a little too much, but sweat is alive.
\nThe cat smells like the cat again.
\nSometimes you stick your head in the pantry because there is saffron in there.<\/p>\n

You stand on the front porch in the morning and watch the dog and smell the world.<\/p>\n
