When Sleep Won’t Come: Help and Hope for Body and Soul

Matt Rehrer, MD

New Growth Press

Author Matt Rehrer is an emergency room physician and a pastor which quite aptly makes him immensely qualified to write on the topic of sleep and its elusiveness. Throughout his insightful and practically presented text, Rehrer guides readers through the steps of productive sleep from both a physical and a spiritual perspective. Christians will find much value in his chapter on what issues of the soul may inhibit sleep which includes: persecution; bodily suffering; fear; post-traumatic and chronic stress; sadness; anger and bitterness; regret; envy; guilt; busyness for our own glory (or for God’s glory); and care for others.

Rest Is A Theological Process

Rehrer also notes that sleep is not just a biological process but a deeply theological process. Here, he unpacks the blessing and beauty of God-given rest while providing scriptural references and texts within his discussion. Perhaps the weightiest section of this resource is the author’s chapter titled, Resting When We Cannot Sleep, where he presents numerous spiritual practices to quiet the body and the mind during these difficult episodes.

Everyone Needs A Good’s Night Sleep

Readers both of the Christian faith and those who are searching will discover a generous supply of information and inspirational hope within the pages of this text. Rehrer writes as a fellow human who desires and requires a good night’s sleep as do we all. Thereby, his counsel is both welcoming and comforting.

Made to Rest: True Peace in a World That Never Stops

Aimee Joseph

New Growth Press

In Made to Rest, author Aimee Joseph, a church-planting wife, helps discerning readers demystify why they are feeling so overwhelmed and tired all the time. Rather than offering simplistic remedies such as the world runs to – unplug, go on a vacation, take more time for yourself, (all worthy in their place); Joseph suggests believers take a deeper inward look. In the first section of her text, Joseph discusses the three main foundational sources for our restlessness in this world: we seek control (when we should be submitting to God’s control in all circumstances); we seek satisfaction (when we need to understand Scripture’s mandate that we can only find true satisfaction in God alone); and we seek righteous in ourselves (we attempt to self-sooth ourselves by becoming pharisaical self-righteous and proud).

Obedience Brings Blessed Rest

Joseph then beautifully unpacks what His Rest looks like from the Bible’s perspective and readers will find themselves encouraged, challenged, and then joyfully delighted by the simplicity offered here. Perhaps the most important step believers must take is to repent (and do it often) viewing repentance as a merciful gift from our loving heavenly Father. Joseph also delves into other key components of discovering true and lasting rest this side of heaven and Christians must take an active part in pursuing and maintaining their purposeful mindsets and actual steps. For instance, the author reminds us throughout her powerful text of biblical characters from both the Old and New Testament and how they frequently failed to find their own rest due to disobedience.

We Find Inner Strength And Resilience Through Rest

We can find lasting rest even in the most trying seasons of life by incorporating frequent remembering of what God has done; realize that we can develop inner strength and resilience through rest; and that God will give us rest even in times of true suffering and overwhelming circumstances through moment-by-moment power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

Made to Rest is a gem of a resource for the harried and stressed believer who can’t seem to find meaningful repose. Highly recommended for new and mature believers alike who desire that inner calm that Jesus promises to those who keep their hearts and minds set on Him alone.
