Get to Work – Seeing Your Daily Grind as God’s Good Gift
Get to Work: Seeing Your Daily Grind as God’s Good Gift
Jonny Ardavanis (Consider the Lilies) is the lead pastor of Stonebridge Bible Church in Franklin, TN. He is also the founder and president of Dial In Ministries (which provides biblical resourcing for the next generation). The author begins his comprehensive and excellent resource by citing the astounding number of hours the average person will work – some 90,000 hours in his lifetime. That’s one third of one’s life…laboring at work.
We Don’t Have To Work – We Get To Work
In this eight-chapter text, Ardavanis lays out the biblical framework of what God’s Word says about work and rest and everything in between. He first and foremost spends ample time outlining how we are to imitate God in His work by understanding how God worked (and works). The author notes that the best gift his father ever gave him was a biblical work ethic by imparting to him the truth that we don’t have to work – we get to work. Big difference. Working is a gift in and of itself and has eternal repercussions.
Our Work Ethic Embodies Our Entire Personhood
Noting how today’s culture has skewed the biblical view of work and doing all one’s work onto the glory of God, Ardavanis notes that one of this generation’s biggest dangers is that of embracing sloth and laziness. We hear much about eliminating hurry, but virtually nothing about eliminating idleness. The author continues on this theme by connecting one’s entire personhood to one’s work ethic. Our spirit, mind, emotions, and physical well-being are all affected by how we view work and how we work.
Work Is A Way We Worship God
Ardavanis cites the dangers of working in a fallen world and ably encourages believers to see past their hardships to what God is accomplishing through their labor. He skillfully offers readers practical insights and tangible hope for those who are mired in challenging work environments. He reminds Christians that despite the difficulties they face at work they must intentionally seek to view their work through the spectacles of God’s Word. He writes, “At its core, work is a way we imitate and worship God.”
God Is Glorified By A High Work Ethic
He cites that all of life is lived “coram Deo,” before the face of God, thus, we must always do our level best to honor Him through our labors be they miniscule or magnificent. Ardavanis challenges Christians to work with gusto, worth with enjoyment, work with excellence, work with integrity, obedience, and kindness, and work gratefully. In each of these areas, God can be glorified and uplifted before an unbelieving world.
Our Work Impacts Eternity
Readers young and old will find much solid resource in this lively, yet deeply profound text. Fans of the author’s previous work, Consider the Lilies, will be equally pleased with Ardavanis’ newest work. Excellent and thoughtfully presented, Get to Work, will both motivate and inspire believers to re-examine their own work ethic and how it impacts eternity.
