Thankful: thunderstorms, parties, and the (lack of) electricity

Last updated on: May 8, 2012 at 7:29 am   By michaboyett

Oh, I’ve missed big spring thunderstorms in Texas, how they hit at 7:30 at night, the perfect time for mysteriousness when you’re a kid: Right after bathtime, right as you’ve stepped into pajamas. How, when the power goes out, nothing matters anymore. Dishes can’t be done, chores can’t be completed. There is only the sitting under flashlights and the telling of stories. And Daddy reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by candlelight. The glowing living room lit by... Read more

Melancholia: Why I wish I hadn’t seen it and why I’m sort of glad I did.

Last updated on: May 6, 2012 at 3:27 pm   By michaboyett

Three weeks ago my husband and I watched the movie Melancholia. If you haven’t heard of the film, I’ll say this: That was probably not a good idea. (At least for me.) It’s not a spoiler to explain that the film is about the end of the world. (There’s no suspense about that going into it.) The movie is named for the planet that eventually collides with and destroys earth. But the story of the film is about two sisters... Read more

For those of us who need Good News…

Last updated on: May 4, 2012 at 6:17 am   By michaboyett

On Fridays I usually post a poem that I’ve read that week or that has moved me in same way. (It’s my effort to force you all to read poetry and like it! You’re allowed to roll your eyes now.) But today, instead of a poem, I’m posting a video I discovered this week through Seth Haines‘ tumblr. I watched it on Tuesday afternoon and cried. Then I watched it with my husband on Tuesday night and cried. Then I... Read more

{Practicing Benedict} Gentle Piety, Warm Charity

Last updated on: May 1, 2012 at 9:10 pm   By michaboyett

At the entrance to the monastery there should be a wise senior who is too mature in stability to think of wandering about and who can deal with the enquiries and give whatever help is required. This official’s room should be near the main door so that visitors will always find someone there to greet them. As soon as anyone knocks on the door or one of the poor calls out, the response, uttered at once with gentle piety and... Read more

Tomato Thankful

Last updated on: May 1, 2012 at 6:00 am   By michaboyett

This bright red tomato just picked from our garden. On the last day of April??? (I can’t get over the weirdness of this. I know I may be from Texas, but Amarillo and Austin are 500 miles away from each other. That equals two very different climates. See here and here if you want to be nerdy about it. And after being a grown-up on the East coast, the idea of April being anything but ground-smushy and 60 degrees is still... Read more

Thoughts on Kairos and Epiphany, the ‘unbidden and unexpected’

Last updated on: April 30, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Micha Boyett Hohorst

I’ve been reading and loving my newest happy discovery, In the Midst of Chaos: Caring for Children as Spiritual Practice. Its author, Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, is a theologian and the book is a straightforward theological teaching on the things we’ve been talking about around here. She’s a mother who believes the Church has missed its opportunity to honor the spiritual formation that can arrive out of the mess of everyday parenting. Often we’re taught that in order to encounter God... Read more

Poem-a-Day Friday: Luci Shaw

Last updated on: April 27, 2012 at 6:00 am   By michaboyett

I had the honor of hearing Luci Shaw and Jeanne Murray Walker discuss “Ambition” together a week ago Thursday. What a gift it was to be at the Festival of Faith and Writing and hear two stunning poets discuss the writing life in the context of faith, to listen to Luci Shaw speak about how she investigates her own inner motivations and questions her need for affirmation. Such honesty and humility is so rare in the poetry world and I... Read more

Dishes and Litany and all that Beauty

Last updated on: April 26, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Micha Boyett Hohorst

I live in the litany of the putting away. The clean dishes go onto shelves, forks and knives and cups and bowls. And the boys are waiting for their food, always waiting for food. I move from fridge to stove to sink to table, little circles. Sometimes it’s morning. I listen to the news in my pajamas. Oatmeal for one child. Cereal for another. I’m slicing an apple. I’m pouring a cup of milk. I’m cleaning up a spill. I’m... Read more

{Practicing Benedict} Compassion and Sober Judgment

Last updated on: May 20, 2012 at 2:24 pm   By michaboyett

“The abbot or abbess, once established in office, must often think about the demands made on them by the burden they have undertaken and consider also to whom they will have to give an account of their stewardship. They must understand the call of their office is not to exercise power over those who are their subjects but to serve and help them in their needs. They must be well-grounded in the law of God so that they may have... Read more

Quoting Thankful

Last updated on: April 24, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Micha Boyett Hohorst

Today for Thankful Tuesday, I want to give you some words I heard over the weekend at the Festival of Faith and Writing, thoughts that have filled me up. I hope they speak something important to you too. (Note: these are from my notes and they may not be exact…though I did my best–my very best!–at the note-taking.) “Repetition…locates us, keeps us where we are, keeps us the way a mother keeps her baby.” –Jeanne Murray Walker “It’s not an... Read more
