Why I’m afraid to tell you where we’re going on vacation

Last updated on: September 4, 2012 at 11:01 pm   By michaboyett

On September 19, Chris and I are going to Italy. Without our kids. And we’re going for ten days. There, I said it. I’ve been so afraid to tell you and there are a lot of reasons: One, I’m afraid you’ll judge me for spending money on a trip like this. (Or even having the money to go on a trip like this.) If your upbringing was anything like my husband’s, you’ll think I’m ridiculous. Why in the world would... Read more

Thankful Tuesday: Pre-Move Moving Weekend

Last updated on: September 3, 2012 at 10:33 pm   By michaboyett

We did it. The movers showed up Friday morning and took all our possessions away to some secret lair in California, where our things will sit until November. Our selves, our cat and our suitcases all showed up Friday afternoon at the temporary house (what I’ve taken to calling our “fake house”). And after one long Friday night (the cat and the oldest boy had trouble sleeping), everyone seemed to adjust pretty quickly. Besides a jaw that won’t stop clenching... Read more

Far far away

Last updated on: August 30, 2012 at 4:44 pm   By michaboyett

Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away! Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Psalm 32: 1-2 That Psalm was in my prayer book last week. I read it last Friday (one of the few days in the past week that my prayer book has actually been opened). I was reminded of it yesterday, when I had a moment to rest and I... Read more

Everything we carry with us.

Last updated on: August 29, 2012 at 10:25 pm   By michaboyett

Yesterday I packed suitcases. I packed a bin of toys for our month in Austin. (We’ll be in a temporary home.) I packed a bin of toys to be delivered to us our first month in San Francisco. (We’ll also be in a temporary home there until November.) I packed fall clothes for all four of us in a bin. I packed suitcases for the month of September. I packed bibs and sippy cups and plastic bowls. I packed clothes... Read more

{This Sacred Everyday} Andrea Palpant Dilley

Last updated on: August 28, 2012 at 8:52 pm   By michaboyett

Andrea Palpant Dilley has led the writer’s group I’ve been part of at my church for the past year. I have adored the community she has created in this group: genuine kindness, encouragement for each person at whatever stage of their writing, and a sweet willingness to celebrate one another. Andrea is one of those people who looks you in the eye and says your name at the beginning of the most important sentences. I’m grateful for her perspective, her... Read more

Marriage and the Easy Yoke

Last updated on: August 26, 2012 at 9:58 pm   By michaboyett

“Are you so pissed at your husband for making you move?” The stylist’s fingers were moving quick through my hair, applying white and blue chemicals, in effort to sustain my vain pursuit of the blonde strands I grew out of 15 years ago. I’d been explaining about our coming move, how this would be my last time at the salon. “Ummmmm…” I said, looking at her reflection in the mirror. I was so caught off guard by her question. Honestly,... Read more

Conversations with Ourselves

Last updated on: August 23, 2012 at 6:46 am   By michaboyett

Today I have the honor of guest posting at Preston Yancey’s blog in his series “Conversations with Ourselves” in which we are given the opportunity to explore what our present self would like say to our past self (or vice versa). It was a gift to be forced to look at myself and love her, to give her grace. So grateful for the chance to write this. * * * It’s her twenty-first birthday. She wakes at 5:30 that August... Read more

{This Sacred Everyday} Holly Grantham

Last updated on: August 21, 2012 at 10:39 pm   By michaboyett

{This Sacred Everyday} is back! And today we’re welcoming Holly Grantham. Holly is a new blogging friend whom I’m I’ve only recently discovered. Her prose is rich and deserves to be read aloud. So if you want to slow down and savor, subscribe to her blog and pour some good coffee, friend. * * *  When the inky night leaks away and the morning glories start their swelling, a familiar humming billows up and I stir.  This melody of sorts,... Read more

Sri Lanka, World Vision, and the Question God is Asking Us

Last updated on: August 21, 2012 at 10:28 pm   By michaboyett

A thousand years ago, also known as July 3, I made a decision to travel to Sri Lanka as a blogger for World Vision. I couldn’t believe I was doing it. It didn’t make any logical sense to me. I had been asked to join the team last minute, the week before. My immediate thought had been, “This is it. This is what I’m supposed to do with my life.” (Yes, a little dramatic. But so goes my brain, friends.)... Read more

Waiting

Last updated on: August 19, 2012 at 9:52 pm   By michaboyett

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. Psalm 92:4   I wait alone in my room, my hands open, arms raised. I wait in silence while my husband and boys read books in the other room. “Brooksie, where is August’s nose?” I hear Chris say. “Do you see August’s nose?” I wait as I read my little boy to sleep in his room and look around it in the dusk. How many... Read more
