Thanksgiving Without Turkey (and stress)

Last updated on: November 24, 2016 at 1:12 pm   By Abra Carnahan

I see all the amazing recipes and Instagrams of set tables. I see people playing football at the park and the mad rush to grab that last minute item at the grocery store. The air smells like roast turkey. It’s Thanksgiving Day….and I’m in bed. The last couple weeks have been rocky for me. I had to quit my job (which I was really loving) because I couldn’t work as many hours as they wanted me to. The stress from... Read more

I Why I Need to Celebrate Halloween

Last updated on: October 30, 2016 at 12:04 pm   By Abra Carnahan

Firstly, Halloween isn’t inherently evil. You can just chuck that idea into the garbage disposal. Here’s a link to get you started with the history lesson, but the short version is that Halloween was originally All Hallows Eve, the day to prepare for All Saints Day (a day to remember and honor the saints passed in glory before us).  All Hallows Eve got hijacked by sin. The concept of a pre- saint’s day party really is a great idea so it... Read more

Blessed with Work

Last updated on: October 8, 2016 at 5:39 pm   By Abra Carnahan

Work is a blessing to me right now. Being employed outside the home forces me to put my housework aside temporarily. It requires me to interact with others, gives me a new outlet for my anxious energy and creativity. Working gets me dressed, fed and out of the house. It is good. I’m working mostly on the computer, with Saturdays in the warehouse where I fold colorful fabric or patterns. I come home tired and happy. I only work when... Read more

Being Glad

Last updated on: September 20, 2016 at 11:42 am   By Abra Carnahan

Today, I am thankful for cold medicine to bring some relief to my kids’ colds. I’m thankful for a bathroom that works and is pretty, for an awesome washer and dryer for laundry. For leftover chicken parmesan made by a friend. I’m thankful for getting past the worst of my ear ache, for my husband being home today and that I was offered the first job I applied for since 2004!     Read more

Thoughts

Last updated on: September 14, 2016 at 5:58 am   By Abra Carnahan

The kids started school on Monday. It feels strange; having these afternoons to myself. There is so much on my To Do list but I feel too tired to do any of it. I want to get out of the house. I want to work again. It has been almost 11 years since I was an active part of the workforce. I’ve been busy. Raising the next generation of adults is good work, but isn’t easy.  I’ve begun submitting resumes’.... Read more

Political Reality Check from My Friend’s Twitter Feed

https://t.co/ZTR5lMMl6I#sermonnotespic.twitter.com/z63uPneEPB — Valerie Kyriosity (@KyriosityTweets) September 12, 2016   This political season kinda reminds me of lent. I don’t know about you, but I’m doing a write in and knowing full well that either of our current candidates are still evidence of God’s grace and mercy toward America. Please note that the subject she is quoting is someone who had blessed me (not to mention the officiant with at my wedding). Please don’t get cranky at me because you may not... Read more

Carnival

Last updated on: August 31, 2016 at 1:30 pm   By Abra Carnahan

I’m alive. Really. I am. The last month has been a veritable circus. We actually went to our county fair for some family fun, which I think was an amusing metaphor. Chaos isn’t always bad. August was a rough month, good and bad stuff. Medication changes are a rollercoaster I hate to ride, but I’m doing it anyway. My thoughts are pretty muddled so if you can’t figure out what I’m saying, rest assured that you are in the majority... Read more

Worth It: Reflections on Twelve Years of Marriage

Last updated on: July 28, 2016 at 2:50 pm   By Abra Carnahan

July 17th was Ben and my twelfth wedding anniversary. 14ish years together. I used to wonder if we’d make it. We will. Those couple of years that are supposed to have been the hardest: One year, three years, years seven to ten.   Check, check, check. You and I have heard this before but it warrants repeating: Marriage isn’t made for personal fulfillment, it is made to glorify God through bringing us into deeper love. We are partners in a... Read more

High Functioning Dysfunction

Last updated on: June 22, 2016 at 11:16 am   By Abra Carnahan

This Mighty article by Amanda Leventhal popped up on my facebook feed today: This is basically my story, too. I vividly remember crying to myself that “I’m not crazy. I’m not crazy. I’m not crazy.” even before I was 13. I carved those words into the bookshelf above my bed to help me stay grounded. I remember sitting in our car with my mom when she said, “You really aren’t happy are you?” I was 14. She took me to... Read more
