Mom Body
Last updated on: December 3, 2014 at 11:13 pm By Abra Carnahan
As I get older, my metabolism with slow, my hormones will fluctuate, my body won’t ever stay the same. I don’t ever want to give my daughters the impression that the pinnacle of my beauty was some time before they were born. I don’t want to feel that way about myself!” -Excerpt from Accepting Our Postpartum Bodies Read more

I was raised primarily in a dispensational church. In college, I joined a reformed evangelical church, pastored by Douglas Wilson (who was, incidentally, the officiate at my wedding. He is a jolly, older man with a special knack for ticking people off — never a dull moment). When that church grew, we transferred to the plant, Trinity Reformed Church (at the time, under Peter Leithart, brain extraordinaire, if your brain feels like it is going to explode when you read... Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you have to give up being a woman. And I think that if we took just a little bit of time, we’d feel so much more invigorated, energetic, and feminine. It’s not a vanity issue; it’s an issue of respect for who you are and for who God made you to be. You are a woman. You are a wife. Those are both good things. Don’t put them on hold because you’re a... Read more

I was looking for a particular photo today and ran across this one. I was 33 weeks pregnant with Liam. Less than two weeks later I was hospitalized due to pre-term labor. Liam was born at 38 weeks. He was 8lbs and 3oz. The day he was born I weighed 125lbs. Days after his birth, I was down to 115lbs. Today, 2 1/2 years later I am 160lbs. I kinda forget how scary my pregnancies were until I see photos... Read more

Facebook: Blessing or Curse

So let me ask you: how are you using social media to join you to the women in your life? How are you being united with friends, old and new, through social media? Is it even possible to deepen our relationships with other women through the means of social media or is it just meant to be about sharing “stuff”. I passionately believe that if we reform the way we use our social media accounts we can do more than... Read more

The Stealth Ninja that is Holiday Comparison (and how it kinteki-geris joy)

It is snowing outside and the Carnahan household couldn’t be more delighted! Snow-bibs and mittens have been pulled on. Little boot prints merrily break up the smooth blanket of freshly fallen snow outside. There is a fort made of chairs and bedding set up in front of our fire-place. Tea is steeping. Home smells like cinnamon and popcorn. The anticipation of coming celebrations hang joyfully in the air. I read a funny exhortation today about social media over the holidays.... Read more

I know this is kinda off topic, but it is such a wonderful example of God’s goodness. My husband and I have 4 meat-loving children. About 5 1/2 years ago, when our second daughter was a baby, we had transitioned into a mostly vegetarian diet (for cholesterol and financial reasons), but after Mira began to speak, she made it clear that meat was her favorite food and that our decision to rarely partake was lowering her quality of life considerably.... Chronic Illness and Sin
Last updated on: November 13, 2014 at 9:03 pm By Abra Carnahan
If someone tells you that the reason you are hurting, the reason you are sick, the reason you are depressed, the reason you need help is because you don’t have enough faith, beware, because that is preaching a prosperity gospel, not the true gospel message. This does *not* mean that the person experiencing these things is not in sin — if you believe Scripture you know we all are (Romans 3:23). What this does mean is that life is a... Read more

Can you handle the truth?
Last updated on: November 10, 2014 at 9:51 pm By Abra Carnahan
[t]he gospel of Jesus Christ is that you can’t fix yourself. You can’t get the stain out. And yet, in the grip of sin, you frequently pretend you can. You pretend you can by wallowing around in it, by marinating in it, by trying to work up a holy sweat. But don’t you see what you’re doing? You are trying to save yourself. You are trying to fix yourself. But you can’t and you won’t feel better later. You might... Read more
