Awake, Awake

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“The modern emphasis that God is a convenience and Jesus Christ so kindly died for us in order that we might have peace of mind is a travesty of the gospel. Sinners know it, and the liberals know it. Only we poor, lethargic evangelicals fail to see it.

Basic goodness, moral soundness and purity of life, honesty that will not cheat tax collectors or anybody else, truthfulness that will not lie about any person more than is present, mercy, humbleness, and forgiving love. What a sight that is, to put on the beautiful garments…”

(ch. 4, pg 58)

Are you awake? That quote should get your blood pumping! Tozer’s book, The Dangers of a Shallow Faith, is a bugle call designed to wake up the lethargic Christian. A rally to war against sleeping through your life:

“If you have been reared in a Christian home where the Bible, the Gospel, the Sunday School and the presence of Christian people have become a routine thing, and you’re not affected by them at all; if even prayer does not affect you, that is a proof that you are morally asleep and need to wake up.”

(pg 54)

Does that sounds familiar? Most of my life can be described in that single sentence. Such waste, such loss, such emptiness.

“Spiritual sophistication lacks freshness and warmth; God is far away, and there is little communion and little joy in the Lord. To have a cold heart with little pity, little fire, little love and little worship is spiritual lethargy.”

(pg 55)

Do you want to wake up? To you want to feel alive? Are your fingers and toes frostbitten? Draw near to the fire. Feel yourself warm from the inside out. Feel passion like (maybe) you’ve never felt before. He is here and He is waiting! Wake up!!

“Awake, awake; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and unclean.”

Isaiah 52:1

If you don’t know how to wake up, how to overcome your lethargy, if you are bored with life, bored with religion, there is help. Feel free to comment here, and I’ll get in touch with you. If you are interested in reading The Dangers of a Shallow faith (I wholly recommend you do) it is available affordably on Amazon.com.
