Light of lights! All gloom dispelling,Thou didst come to make thy dwellingHere within our world of sight.Lord, in pity and in power,Thous didst in our darkest hourRend the clouds and show thy light. Praise to thee in earth and heavenNow and evermore be given,Christ, who art out sun and shield,Lord, for us thy life thou gavest,Those who trust in thee thou savest,All thy mercy stands revealed. Council of Trent Opens, 1545

Last updated on: December 13, 2009 at 6:27 am   By Pat McNamara

Today marks the opening of the Council of Trent. The 1911 Catholic Encycloepdia writes: “The nineteenth ecumenical council opened at Trent on 13 December, 1545, and closed there on 4 December, 1563. Its main object was the definitive determination of the doctrines of the Church in answer to the heresies of the Protestants; a further object was the execution of a thorough reform of the inner life of the Church by removing the numerous abuses that had developed in it.”(1911... Read more

Last updated on: December 13, 2009 at 6:25 am   By Pat McNamara

Today isn’t her feast day, but today does mark the day that St. Frances De Chantal died in 1641. Her father was president of the Parliament of Burgundy, and leader of the royalist party during the League that brought about the triumph of the cause of Henry IV. Quote of the Day

Last updated on: December 12, 2009 at 5:25 am   By Pat McNamara

Was there a moment, known only to God, when all the stars held their breath, when the galaxies paused in their dance for a fraction of a second, and the Word, who had called it all into being, went with all his love into the womb of a young girl, and the universe started to breathe again, and the ancient harmonies resumed their song, and the angels clapped their hands for joy?Madeleine L’Engle Read more

In 1531 a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary. She made a request for a church to be built on the site. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church’s local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill... Read more
