The Magick & Psychism in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Last updated on: September 9, 2019 at 4:51 pm   By Mat Auryn

While the original Dark Crystal Movie seemed to have more Mystical, Occult, and Spiritual themes, The Age of Resistance has more magickal, psychic, and political themes. Here are some of the main psychic and magickal ideas that I saw in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Read more

Review: The Door To Witchcraft

Last updated on: September 5, 2019 at 4:08 pm   By Mat Auryn

What I particularly loved about The Door To Witchcraft is how modern it was for a 101 book - it’s super inclusive and welcoming, without any gatekeeping or any of the problematic stances of previous paradigms. Read more

Review: Southern Cunning

Last updated on: September 5, 2019 at 2:02 am   By Mat Auryn

Southern Cunning, on one hand, has the type of folk magic you'd expect from a book of this nature. On the other hand, Oberon has taken these practices and mixed them with Traditional Witchcraft, local urban legends passed down, and the folkloric ideas of the witch from both Europe and the Southern regions of the United States. Read more

The Ancestry Of A Book: Psychic Witch

Last updated on: September 1, 2019 at 10:02 pm   By Mat Auryn

Ensuring that you're offering something new, something that hasn't been offered in the certain way your book has before involves a lot of thread weaving between different book influences and adding your own interpretation, vision, practices, theories, exploration, and ideas that have worked for you to the rich legacy that has come before you to ensure that you're providing something new and helpful and not merely a rehashing of older works. Read more

In Defense Of Silver Ravenwolf’s Teen Witch Kit

Last updated on: August 6, 2019 at 7:23 pm   By Mat Auryn

While revisiting the Teen Witch Kit, I realized how absolutely genius the book was and how ahead of its time it was. Before there was this flood of hardcover books with pretty covers trending on instagram and tumblr, there was the Teen Witch Kit - the format of which is absolutely the precursor of these now popular books. Read more

Review: Morbid Magic

Last updated on: August 4, 2019 at 6:13 pm   By Mat Auryn

Coming from a background as a mortician and a magickal practitioner devoted to Santa Muerte, Tomás Prower wants us to face the reality of death right off the bat and have us confront the cold reality that we're disconnected to as a modern society. The main heart of the book is contrasting it with how death is and was treated outside of Western Culture in the present time. Read more

Trauma and Psychic Awakening

Last updated on: August 4, 2019 at 2:07 am   By Mat Auryn

I've seen anthropologists refer to this as "shamanic death." It's also not uncommon for Buddhist and sometimes magickal traditions to perform something similar in an act sometimes referred to as "ego death." Aleister Crowley referred to this as the "Night of Pan", while Carl Jung referred to this as "psychic death." Read more

I Believe In ‘Woo-Woo’ Healing and Science

Last updated on: August 4, 2019 at 1:22 am   By Mat Auryn

The 'woo-woo' is the approach of the witch. It's said that witches don't directly try to alter a situation head-on, but rather focus on addressing the energy around a problem until the problem fixes itself. Sometimes this alone works, sometimes it doesn't. The holistic is the approach of the wise witch. No matter how powerful of a witch or a healer we are, we are also physical creatures - human. As such, we are still bound to the laws of nature, biology, and 'the real world'. Sometimes we can bypass this and bend those laws, sometimes we cannot. Sometimes we need to directly approach and address a situation first before looking at and addressing the energy around a situation. We cannot forget that we are multidimensional beings with several energetic bodies, the first of which is the physical body. Read more
