Review: Witchcraft Activism

Last updated on: June 3, 2020 at 2:29 am   By Mat Auryn

David is neither an armchair occultist nor a keyboard warrior activist - he's someone who is always rolling up his sleeves to do the actual work both behind the scenes and on the front lines in both these areas. Witchcraft Activism: A Toolkit for Magical Resistance is a masterful blend of these two areas of Salisbury's expertise and passion. Read more

Eleven Books To Enhance Your Spell-Casting

Last updated on: August 2, 2019 at 4:40 pm   By Mat Auryn

You have no idea how many times I've seen people recommend ancient grimoires as a starting point for seekers. I feel that's setting them up for failure. Before you can learn to run marathons you need to learn how to crawl and walk first. So here are my eleven favorite books that focus solely (or almost entirely) on the subject of casting spells. All of the books are either written for beginners or intermediate skilled witches and have a fairly good range of different approaches and strategies regarding the skill most associated with the witch - casting spells. Read more

The Mysticism, Spirituality & Occultism of The Dark Crystal

Last updated on: August 2, 2019 at 4:41 pm   By Mat Auryn

The following are some of the occultism, mysticism, mythology, and spirituality that I see not only in the Dark Crystal movie but also within its prequels. These are some ideas that I don't really see on the internet when people explore these subjects with the film and books, and when people do they tend to be very strange conspiracy theories - usually by people who seem to think that reptilian aliens are running the world, which they believe is flat. Read more

Our Pagan War On Christmas

Last updated on: December 6, 2019 at 4:23 pm   By Mat Auryn

The right-wing Christian demagogues keep saying that there's a "War on Christmas" and the truth is they actually aren't technically wrong from a Pagan perspective. While they may be referring to people's thoughtful inclusion of other cultures, religions, and even secular celebrations during this time of year as an attack against them when they speak of the War on Christmas. For a lot of us Pagans, the War on Christmas is a holy observance, but not necessarily how it's being framed by these demagogues. Read more

Winter Solstice Books For Pagans & Witches

Last updated on: December 6, 2019 at 4:24 pm   By Mat Auryn

I was told by someone that they were having trouble finding good books on Yule and the Winter Solstice, while another person messaged me to ask for some recommendations on books on the Krampus and other folklore. I also thought it would be easier to make a public "recommended reading" for the holiday season. So here are ten fantastic books on both celebrating the Winter Solstice, as well as learning about the origins, myths, and folklore of the seasonal celebration. Read more
