How Not to Argue for the Prolife Position 2017-09-06T01:20:30-07:00 Mark Shea
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Matt Walsh sez, “Please don’t complain about deporting children if you support murdering them.”
It could have been a piece demonstrating the hypocrisy of the Left, but with an unerring instinct for wrongness that is a golden thread through so much of his work, Walsh instead writes a piece demonstrating the hypocrisy of the anti-abortion-but-not-prolife Christian Right:
There are respectable arguments a person can make on either side of the immigration debate. Personally, I’m in favor of enforcing our immigration laws, but, theoretically, a reasonable person could articulate a coherent case in favor of showing “mercy” to these kids.
All you need to to see the transparent falsity is to cast it in reverse:
There are respectable arguments a person can make on either side of the abortion debate. Personally, I’m in favor of life, but a reasonable person could articulate a case in favor of abortion.
Walsh is not defending life. He is defending spitting in the faces of innocent Dreamers and kicking them out of the only country they have ever known. Note the scare quotes on “mercy”. Because really, these kids who were brought here as small children, who live decent, productive lives and are guilty of no crime whatsoever still need to be punished and deported. Man was made for the law, not the law for man. And so the grave and intrinsic evil of mass deportation of innocents from their homes–an evil every bit as worthy of the everlasting fires of hell as abortion is–is AOK with Matt Walsh and you can hide behind the unborn while cheering for it in defiance of the American bishops and Veritatis Splendor 80.
The use of the unborn as human shields for every act of inhuman cruelty popular with the Right Wing Culture of Death is the Number 1 reason the “prolife” movement’s credibility is in tatters. It’s not Evil Libruls who have made the prolife movement a scandal and a hissing. It’s arguments like Walsh’s.
There is not a reason in the world you cannot say aborting children *and* deporting Dreamers are massively immoral crimes. But the instinct of almost the entirety of the Old Prolife Movement is to make arguments like Walsh’s every time. Such arguments *always* pit the unborn against the rest of the Church’s teaching about the sanctity of life from conception to natural death and demand that we choose the unborn and use him has a weapon against whatever victim that Culture of Death seeks–(in this case) the innocent deportee. It is cruel and it is cynical and it has to stop.
