Trump’s federal hiring freeze lifted 11 days early. How on Earth is that a good idea?

President Trump’s federal hiring freeze has been lifted 11 days earlier than planned and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why.

Trump was elected because of his tough talk on the campaign trail. Trump promised to “drain the swamp” and shrink the federal government by cutting off the bureaucracy at its knees. So far, there’s been some good headway made to these ends. So, why end the hiring freeze early?

Surely the bloated federal behemoth needs more than just a few months to figure out how to restrain itself. They need every last second. But only 79 days? That’s not even enough time for Elizabeth Warren to figure out she’s not Native American.

And how the Office of Personnel Management Director Mick Mulvaney is assuring us we have nothing to worry about is laughable. Agencies are back to hiring without restriction, but Mulvaney says no one is allowed to “begin onboarding employees willy-nilly.”

He’s got to be kidding, right?

Welcome to the new Trump era of “no willy-nilly.”

Good Lord, that’s assuring. Is that the best we’ve got? Can we put that in the Code of Federal Regulations?  “No willy-nilly onboarding.”  Or perhaps we can have the “No Willy-Nilly Executive Order.”

Here’s an idea: How about not saying things like “willy-nilly” and just keep the damn hiring freeze in place? That’s what we put you in office to do. We’re not even talking cutbacks, even though we should. Is it that hard to maintain a simple hiring freeze?

Even just 11 days early is a HUGE, or shall I say, YUGE step backward. Now is not the time to start reneging on promised plans willy-nilly. (See, it doesn’t feel so good on the other side, does it?) This is weakness on the part of the administration and conservatives will not view this as “rebuilding the federal government form scratch” like has been promised.
