Here’s a question some of us can’t seem to outrun and others of us fear like the plague: “What is the point of my job?” To launch into the work side of 2016, we begin with a slight spin on this question: “Does my work matter to God?”
Answer: “Yes.” The first of 10 reasons why is this: God’s work is complete.
God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth…2:15Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. (Genesis 1:27-28; 2:15)
In the creation accounts we find in Genesis, we see God setting the stage and then turning over the cosmos to human beings to continue to manage and develop. The work of building this world is a divine-human partnership.
Whenever our work takes some aspect of the world and makes it better we are joining God in the work of creation. Taking what is and improving it can take many forms: better organized, a better fit, more efficient, more environmentally friendly, more humane, or more beautiful—work that preserves and improves our world is work that matters to God.
How does your work pickup on the unfinished work of God in making the world a better place for people to thrive?
