4 Things You Need to Know About the Holy Spirit to Live a Spirit-Filled Life 2018-09-25T00:31:56-04:00 Mark Driscoll

  1. The Holy Spirit is God

In addition to the Father and Son, the Holy Spirit is clearly called God throughout the Scriptures. In the Old Testament we see he possesses the attributes of God, which reveals his divinity; he is creator (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 104:30), eternal (Heb. 9:14), omnipotent or all-powerful (Mic. 3:8; Acts 1:8; Rom. 15:13,19), omniscient or all-knowing (Isa. 40:13-14; 1 Cor. 2:10), and omnipresent (Ps.139:7). In the New Testament, he is also clearly declared God:

2 Corinthians 3:17–18 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is,        there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are   being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this        comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Acts 5:3–4 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy       Spirit…You have not lied to man but to God.”

This final verse is, in my opinion, likely the clearest Scripture declaring that the Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit does not much draw attention to Himself as His ministry is to glorify Jesus. But, in this occasion the Spirit takes center stage and is clearly declared to be God.
