You are more content if your spouse is your standard.

Before creating Eve and bringing her to meet her hubby, God first brought the animals before Adam to name each of them (Genesis 1-2). That seems like a humorous moment with Adam perhaps asking over and over something like, “uhhh, that’s not my spouse, right Lord?” as everything from an aardvark to a zebra paraded past. Then, God finally brought Adam and Eve together.

Adam and Eve had never met another human being. Therefore, they had no one to compare one another to. Each was the greatest, most amazing, wonderful and beautiful person they had ever met.

Admittedly, things are a lot more complicated today. As our culture becomes more and more technical and visual, everything from marketing and advertising to the endless parade of selfies making us look our best—not to mention the flood of celebrity and pornography pictures—causes a culture of comparison. Add to this the fact that various people have various strengths, from a good sense of humor to a generous heart or willingness to serve, and we can start to create a standard for our spouse that is little more than the greatest hits of all humanity.

The entire goal of comparison is to cause us to not be content with the life and spouse the Lord has given us. 1 Timothy 6:6 says, “…godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.” Godliness and contentment in our romantic relationship allows us to have true intimacy, safety, and connection at the soul level as God intends without the pressure to perform to some unfair standard.
