About

Shawn F. Higgins is an independent scholar and historian specializing in nineteenth-century esoteric and religious movements, and a leading expert in the history of the Theosophical Society and its American development. With an undergraduate degree in History of Religion from the New School University and an MTs degree in Religion, Literature, and Culture from Harvard Divinity School, his published academic work includes contributions to Theosophical History and Dewey Studies, alongside critical editions, archival recoveries, and studies of key figures and regional histories within early Theosophy. As a longtime contributor to Patheos, he has developed a substantial archive examining the intersections of mysticism, philosophy, literature, reform, and occult currents in the Gilded Age and surrounding decades.
