“God couldn’t be everywhere, so he made mothers”. Although this saying has been attributed to several people, it’s no less true.
Mothers are simply awesome and most of us have experienced their influence in our lives in one way or another. From listening to people talking about mothers to reading about the mothers in the Bible, you can see that others have a special and divine role in God’s plan and purpose for life- family!
Mothers are the creators and nurturers and work together with fathers to bring about a family. Traditionally, mothers were tasked with taking care of their children, nurturing, cherishing and teaching them. Things might have changed over the years, but they still remain nurturers and are synonymous with comfort, care, and love.
What does a mother’s divine role entail?
Cherishing children
There isn’t one perfect or ideal way to be a good mother and that’s great. Mothers come in all shapes and sizes and are each equipped with different skills and abilities to handle their unique situations. Through it all, they cherish their children, providing love, comfort, and care as only mothers can.
A mother’s love is legendary and it’s well known that no matter how ill-behaved or difficult children get, most mothers still love them. For most of us, our mothers were our first cheerleaders, offering support, believing in us and giving us the strength to overcome the challenges that we faced.
Being a nurturer
Regardless of whether you’re single or married, whether you’ve given birth or not, you as a woman have the gift and ability to nurture thanks to your divine nature. This ability isn’t restricted just to your flesh and blood. The blessings and roles of motherhood needn’t be confined to your own children.
If you look around you, you can find plenty of opportunities to reach out to others with love and compassion. You can find chances to extend kindness, serve, spread and share God’s love with those around you. Through you, others can also feel the tender love of a mother’s care and influence. That’s what it means to be a nurturer.
Teaching your children
Mothers are the first teachers for most children. This is an awesome role as they are responsible for planting the seeds of truth and lovingly cultivating the principles of Godly living in their children’s fertile minds.
As a mother, it’s important for you to seek divine guidance to be able to ascertain your child’s talents and strengths and know how to best guide them to achieve their full potential. Your job isn’t to plan out your child’s life. God has already designed that plan. Yours is to understand how you fit in God’s plan for your child and know how to best equip them to achieve their purpose in line with their divine path.
Protecting and caring for the family
We tend to think of protecting as something only fathers can do. Nonetheless, mothers also play a critical part in protecting their families both physically and spiritually. Spiritually, you can protect your children by teaching them God’s commandments and ensuring they abide by them. As Proverbs 22:6-8 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
However, as you go about protecting your children, be careful not to overdo it. It can be hard to watch your child struggle and because of this, some mothers step in and become overprotective. As a result, their children fail to experience the natural consequences of their poor decisions, meaning they don’t learn from their mistakes.
You need to recognize that sometimes your instinctive desire to protect your child from harm can bring them further harm. Sometimes, it’s better to allow them to feel the sting of their mistakes in order to learn.
No mother is perfect and we all need a helping hand sometimes. If you feel that your child or teen is out of control, reach out to the professionals to help get their lives back on track.
Do your best with what you have
It’s common for us to think that God uses extraordinary people to further His plans. However, the Bible teems with examples where He used ordinary people and the simple things they had. Think of Moses’ mother and the basket of reeds or David and his sling. The same is true for mothers. Do the very best you can with what you have to bring up your children, spread God’s love and live according to His word. When God sees your efforts and sincere heart, He will no doubt bless your efforts.
Sometimes, we feel that our efforts are not good enough. You find yourself questioning your mothering techniques and regretting some of the decisions you’ve made. You second guess yourself and beat yourself up with guilt. Well, stop it and remind yourself that you are enough! As long as you do your best and trust God to come through, things will work out. Even if it doesn’t seem that way at first.
So mothers everywhere, take heart! Yours is a special and divine role in God’s plan so be confident that He who began this good work in you will carry it on to completion!
