It’s Been 27 Years!
I was only 23 years old when I married the love of my life and 27 years have passed from the day we took the plunge and got hitched! How is it that or marriage has lasted this long?
On December 14, 2016, my wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We celebrated at home with our three children. Many go all out on their Silver Jubilee. It’s common to throw an elaborate party, invite friends and family and make it known that this marriage has lasted for 25 years. That was not our case. Ours was a quiet affair, we didn’t go out for dinner and we didn’t throw an elaborate party. There were no flowers or promises of love and fidelity until the day we die. We just enjoyed our company and then we ate cake with our three boys and a few of our close our friends! This was, in my opinion, one of the best anniversary ever!
This year marked our 27th wedding anniversary and it was great! We didn’t do much on Friday December 14th, 2018. I sent some flowers to my wife at work so her co-workers could see! She was very pleased.
On Saturday we got dressed up and took our boys to The Tower of the Americas in downtown San Antonio. We had a very nice time there and then we went home and had “Tres Leches” cake with our three boys. As we concluded our day, we asked ourselves, “How is it that we have been together for 27 years while many other couples seem to be getting divorced within the first 10 years”?
We Agree
We both agreed that we have built our life together to last through all the fires that might come our way. We’ve been
through many of those fires and, while we occasionally got singed, and sometimes had to trust God for healing and nurturing, we are now strong in our understanding of each other. But most importantly, we are strong because of God. When we tied the knot, it wasn’t just Yolanda and I that made the commitment to make this marriage last. God was going to be the glue that would hold us together, forever!
You know, It’s important that we get this right. For God uses marriage to illustrate his relationship with his church. I look forward to celebrating anniversary after anniversary till death do us part. I don’t know how log that will be, but my desire is that we will grow old together, celebrate our 50th and our 75th anniversaries together.
Mark Twain said,” No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century”. Well, we have past that mark and at 27 I can say confidently that it just seems to get better.
What Does God Say?
God said, “Husbands, love your wife in the same way that Jesus loved the church”. (Personal paraphrase). If you want your marriage to last, you need to live to die for your wife. Men, you need to understand this in order to push through those tough times that are guaranteed to come in any marriage.
To my wife; I pray that God will grant us a lifetime together. I cannot imagine my life without you. You complete me! My life would be so empty without you. The Lord bless you and keep you and fill you with blessings.
To my three sons; I pray that when they grow up and get married, they will remember how I treated their mother and that they will treat their wives in the same way or even better. God bless them with Godly wives that will complete them like my wife has done for me.
To God; Thank you!
You have taught us to give thanks in every circumstance. Well, 27 winters have come and gone and it has not always been easy, but I give you thanks for being the glue that has held this couple together. Thank you for being our Lord and for teaching this humble man a little bit about being a husband to your daughter!
To my readers; I pray your lives will be full our God’s wisdom as you do life God’s way!
Now go, and be a man!
