Just the thought of Mercury Retrograde can instil all kinds of anxiety. But as a hypnotherapist, I often realise Mercury is in retrograde because I’m suddenly much busier.
That’s because it often dredges up issues from the past, or issues which have roots in the past.
Phobias for example, are often rooted in past experiences, either our own or the experiences of our ancestors. (We can inherit phobias by watching our parents fear, but there’s also research showing we can inherit fear of things that caused a trauma response in our ancestors)
It’s also a time when those limiting beliefs we all have start to make a nuisance of themselves.
Limiting beliefs are beliefs we hold about ourselves and others that lie unchallenged in the subconscious. We may not even be aware we have them because our brains just continue to function as though they are true without any input from the conscious mind.
These can be things like “I’m not clever” or “I’m not good at making friends”. This can stop us trying things, or actively block us from achieving.
Mercury retrograde can stick a pin in these and pull them out to investigate.
And it can do this by throwing up scenarios where these limiting beliefs become conscious and stop us from moving forwards.
Mercury retrograde can also bring up past trauma.
The memories and emotions we repress can be triggered by every day occurrences, but some people believe this is more likely to happen when Mercury is in retrograde.
The things we repress have a habit of starting to thaw when Mercury decides to go backwards.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Being triggered is no fun, but again, it offers the opportunity to explore and process that which was hidden.
It can feel like you’ve been shaken up, but the fact these emotions are appearing in the conscious part of your mind means they’re ready to be worked with.
So how can you work with the past during this Mercury Retrograde?
If you do want to ditch any habits, now is the perfect time to do so. The same goes for finally squaring up to and banishing that phobia or fear.
It’s also a good time to focus in and explore limiting beliefs. During shamanic journeys, pathworkings, and hypnosis sessions you can ask why you find yourself blocked from doing a certain thing. By focusing in on where that belief comes from, you can process it and transform it into a brand new non-limiting belief.
Mercury Retrograde is also a great time to revisit old projects.
Particularly those you really wanted to see blooming but experienced setbacks with. You can use this time to look at what happened and find another way forward. Whilst Mercury retrograde isn’t the best time to start new projects, it can be an incredibly powerful time to go back to shelved projects and ignite them.
