What kind of person are you becoming?

Last updated on: December 10, 2013 at 7:16 pm   By Eric Teetsel

(On Tuesday, December 10, I was invited to give the chapel address at Colorado Christian University. This is a version of my remarks.) What is the most important question you can ask? I’ve been asked some pretty good ones: Will you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? That’s pretty high on my list. Are you going to help us? Chuck Colson asked me that question a couple of years ago when I took my current job with... Read more

Gotta Serve Somebody

Last updated on: December 5, 2013 at 8:25 pm   By Eric Teetsel

You may be an ambassador to England or France You may like to gamble, you might like to dance You may be the heavyweight champion of the world You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls   But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You’re gonna have to serve somebody Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you’re gonna have to serve somebody –Bob Dylan, Gotta Serve Somebody  In America,... Read more

SCOTUS to hear religious freedom challenges to HHS mandate

Last updated on: November 26, 2013 at 12:30 pm   By Eric Teetsel

The Supreme Court announced Tuesday it will hear two challenges to the Health and Human Services abortion and contraception mandate enacted as part of President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Two companies, nation-wide arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby and Pennsylvania cabinet maker Conestoga Wood Specialties, argue that the administrative requirement to subsidize employees’ abortion and contraception in their employer-sponsored health coverage is a violation of the religious beliefs that are part and parcel of their business. From... Read more

The Church Must Respond to Religious Persecution

Last updated on: November 4, 2013 at 1:48 pm   By Eric Teetsel

On September 24, 2013, Congressman Frank Wolf exhorted the students and faculty of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary to consider and respond to the plight of religious people around the world being persecuted for their faith, especially Christians. In a stunning statement, the Congressman, who has served his district since 1981, argued that the solutions required to stem these acts of violence and other forms of persecution will not come from Washington D.C., but from the pulpit. Therefore, he said, it is... Read more

Religious Freedom in 10 Minutes

Last updated on: October 1, 2013 at 4:45 pm   By Eric Teetsel

This week I had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion on religious freedom and the Supreme Court at the Religion Newswriters Association Conference in Austin, TX. Our diverse panel included an atheist, the head of a local C4 founded by Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood, and a Christian attorney from the Liberty Institute. Below is text somewhat closely resembling my opening remarks: What is religious freedom and why does it matter? The pursuit of answers to ultimate questions... Read more

Matt Birk’s Courageous Voice

Last updated on: June 12, 2013 at 10:14 am   By Eric Teetsel

Notably absent from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens’ recent celebratory visit to the White House was the anchor of their offensive line, All-Pro center Matt Birk. The 15-year veteran with a degree in economics from Harvard has been named to six Pro Bowls, but faith and family are his first priorities. When Birk learned that President Obama had invoked God in a speech to Planned Parenthood he knew he had to make a choice. “I wasn’t there,” Birk explained... Read more

Taking a Walk for Marriage

Last updated on: June 12, 2013 at 10:14 am   By Eric Teetsel

Today I had the opportunity join thousands of others in the March for Marriage. On the first day of Supreme Court arguments on marriage a diverse crowd gathered on the National Mall to show support for marriage between one man and one woman, united as husband and wife to be mother and father to their children. After making our way down the Mall to the front steps of the Court (weaving peacefully through a smaller group of same-sex marriage supporters... Read more

Defending DOMA

Last updated on: June 12, 2013 at 10:14 am   By Eric Teetsel

Recently, the Manhattan Declaration filed an amicus brief (“Friend of the Court”) on behalf of its 535,000+ signers in USA v. Windsor a case coming before the Supreme Court this spring questioning the Constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as one man, one woman in federal law. John Mauck, the attorney who authored the brief, explains in an op-ed in the Washington Times why DOMA is important:   The Manhattan Declaration describes marriage as “the first institution... Read more

On My Honor

Last updated on: June 12, 2013 at 10:14 am   By Eric Teetsel

I wasn’t a Boy Scout for long, but the memories have stayed with me for years. While my family was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, our troop traveled to France and Belgium, where we scampered around the battlements guarding the shores of Normandy and dove in and out of craters at Pont du Hoc. I saw the spot where General Anthony McAuliffe responded to the Nazi commander “Nuts” when he demanded the surrender of the 101st Airborne surrounded outside Bastogne in... Read more

Neglecting Religious Voices

Last updated on: January 18, 2013 at 11:34 am   By Eric Teetsel

Over at American Spectator I write that the fiasco involving Louie Giglio is only the latest in a series of incidents demonstrating President Obama’s low view of religious expression: Noticeably absent from next week’s inaugural ceremonies will be evangelical pastor Louie Giglio, unceremoniously dumped from the dais when a liberal blog unearthed a sermon from last century in which Giglio preaches from the Bible about sex. (For a quick primer, seeGeorge Neumayr’s piece from Wednesday.) Under the Obama administration such beliefs... Read more
