Saturday Link Love: Dubai, Fake Time Covers, and Stephen Miller 2019-11-16T10:59:41-04:00 Libby Anne

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Saturday Link Love is a feature where I collect and post links to various articles I’ve come upon over the past week. Feel free to share any interesting articles you’ve come along as well! The more the merrier!

“You’re Essentially a Prisoner’: Why Do Dubai’s Princesses Keep Trying To Escape? on Vanity Fair—“Though women in Dubai are increasingly becoming business and governmental leaders, the Emirates also enforces the law of male guardianship, which means that husbands and fathers control the destiny of their daughters and wives.”

Note: Just recently, my almost middle school aged daughter looked up from the magazine she was reading to say, in hushed and horrified tones, ‘women in Saudi Arabia weren’t allowed to drive??’ I explained the guardianship system to her, and she looked at me askance, almost disbelieving. So, yeah, remind me why we are confused about why Dubai’s princesses keep trying to escape?

Senior Trump official embellished résumé, had face on fake Time cover, on NBC—“A senior Trump administration official has embellished her résumé with misleading claims about her professional background — even creating a fake Time magazine cover with her face on it — raising questions about her qualifications to hold a top position at the State Department.”

Note: Even with everything I’ve already read about the Trump administration’s crap vetting system, this one really upset me. Apparently all you have to do is blatantly lie about your accomplishments and hang around rich people and you get the job with the big bucks. So this is how it works? SMH.

Stephen Miller’s Affinity for White Nationalism Revealed in Leaked Emails, on Southern Poverty Law Center—“Miller recommended in a Sept. 6, 2015, email that Breitbart write about ‘The Camp of the Saints*,*‘ a racist French novel by Jean Raspail.”

Note: I find this whole sudden “discovery” that individuals like Stephen Miller and Richard Spencer are in fact white supremacists maddening, because we f*cking knew this.

The 2017 College Grad Who Got Attacked by a Horde of YA Authors Had No Idea What She Was Getting Into, on Slate—“In other words, the university publicly apologized for one of its English students having an opinion on—and joining a committee to work for—its college-wide reading program.”

Note: Apparently my talkativeness streak is at the end, because I don’t really have any commentary on this one, except to say that I’ve aside that social media is the devil. You’re welcome!
