The Devil and an Exorcism: Jesus Upsets Business as Usual

Last updated on: August 6, 2018 at 7:20 am   By Jack Hartjes

Jesus’ teaching “with authority” is an attack on the scribes, but it’s the devil who complains. That makes surprising sense. Mark’s Gospel has a political setting. Now something appears as if from another world, but Mark gives it a close connection with this world of political maneuvering, including Jesus’ politics. Fifth in a series on “The Worldly Spirituality of Mark’s Gospel” with help from Ched Myers’ Binding the Strongman: A Political Reading of Mark’s Story of Jesus. The Introduction and... Read more

Xenophobia, Religion, and Secularism

Last updated on: August 3, 2018 at 5:57 am   By Jack Hartjes

Surveys show that xenophobia, prejudice against people whom one sees as other, is more prevalent among religious people than among people with no religious affiliation. This is a problem today, and it was also for Jews and Christians during Bible times. The Bible has something to say about it, and so should preachers. (Today I take another break from the current series of posts. I’ll do that mostly on Friday. Next post will be back to Mark’s Gospel.) Psychology Today... Read more

Fishers of Men in the Kingdom of God. Fish Hooks for Which People?

Last updated on: August 6, 2018 at 7:28 am   By Jack Hartjes

Jesus tells his first disciples, “I will make you fishers of men.” It’s a more aggressive start to the Kingdom of God than you might think. Jesus echoes the prophets Jeremiah and Amos. They prophesied that oppressors of the people will be dragged away with fishhooks. Fourth in a series on “The Worldly Spirituality of Mark’s Gospel” with help from Ched Myers’ Binding the Strongman: A Political Reading of Mark’s Story of Jesus. Woman, Man, Symbols of God, and an Article by Abigail Favale

Last updated on: July 27, 2018 at 8:08 am   By Jack Hartjes

My inner feminist woke up almost from the moment that I became aware of issues relating to women’s welfare or, more bluntly but accurately, the oppression of women. So “Sex and Symbol,” the title of an article in Church Life Journal, one of my favorite online magazines, intrigued but ultimately disappointed me. The author, Abigail Favale, is Director of the William Penn Honors Program at George Fox University. I don’t treat women the same as men, and I never went... Read more

The Worldly Spirituality of the Gospel of Mark

Last updated on: February 22, 2020 at 8:32 am   By Jack Hartjes

Introduction to a Series on the Earliest Gospel A worldly spirituality moves more deeply than usual into the heart of matter, That theme has occupied my thoughts for some time. Now I’m pursuing it through a reading of the Gospel of Mark. There I’m finding that material concerns, including what we call politics, economics, and culture (but a first-century Jew would have known them simply as life in the world), are Jesus’ concerns. First of a series on the Gospel... Read more

Chosen People, Part Two: Paul’s Vision, a New Tribe?

Last updated on: February 20, 2020 at 6:34 am   By Jack Hartjes

St. Paul was the great apostle to the Gentiles. He didn’t require circumcision of his converts. That’s something I can easily appreciate, but I found I needed more work to understand it. What was Paul’s vision of God’s chosen people. Episode 16-2 of the Rowing with Michael Series: A journey through the Jewish/Christian Scriptures in Verse and Commentary. Introduction and Contents for this series HERE. The Jews knew something about why God chose them. It’s in God’s promise to Abraham: In... Read more

Jonah, a prophet of God’s Chosen People, learns a painful lesson about God’s all-inclusive love. Jews and Christians both identify themselves as chosen people.
