“A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.”

Last updated on: August 19, 2012 at 6:17 pm   By Jeffrey Overstreet

It’s a Nietzsche quote. The essential thing ‘in heaven and earth’ is . . . that there should be long obedience in the same direction; there thereby results, and has always resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living. It’s the title of a Eugene Peterson book on “the Psalms of Ascents”. And if Bono gets his way… (more…) Read more

“Empire State of Mind” – The Star Wars Way

Last updated on: August 19, 2012 at 6:19 pm   By Jeffrey Overstreet

By now, you’d think that there wouldn’t be any laughs left to wring from Star Wars on the internet. I’ve seen so many unimaginative spoofs and parodies that I usually ignore links to Star Wars-related humor. When it comes to pure genius, I don’t think anybody’s topped the James Earl Jones re-dubbing marathon called “The Vader Sessions“, which appeared a few years ago and is still funny today. Well, today, there’s a new one worth seeing… (more…) Read more

Auralia’s Artist: A Conversation with Kristopher K. Orr

Last updated on: April 4, 2015 at 1:06 pm   By Jeffrey Overstreet

Recently, I wrote a whole article about my gratitude for the work of Kristopher Orr, the visionary who crafted the cover art for The Auralia Thread. That gave me an idea: Why not do an interview with Kristopher about his work? So here it is, a conversation with the man who made Auralia stand out beautifully on bookshelves everywhere… Where did you first develop an interest in illustration? (more…) Read more

Stockwell Takes On L’Engle, DiCamillo, Miyazaki. [-updated-]

Last updated on: August 19, 2012 at 6:27 pm   By Jeffrey Overstreet

[THIS POST HAS BEEN REVISED TO CORRECT AN ERROR. Bedrock Pictures is not necessarily making all three of the films in question. But the screenwriter, Jeff Stockwell, is attached to all three projects.] Bedrock Pictures plans to make a movie of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time, from a script by Jeff Stockwell. And my, my… Stockwell’s a busy guy. He’s also working on adaptations of Kate DiCamillo’s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service.... Read more

Judy Dench Has Been Cast in a Period Piece… Finally!

Last updated on: August 21, 2012 at 9:34 am   By Jeffrey Overstreet

Judi Dench will be playing a supporting role in the costume drama Jane Eyre, the latest adaptation of the classic novel by Charlotte Brontë. So, of course, that means this is a project to be taken seriously. I’d love to see someone do a clever mash-up of Dench’s scenes from all of the period pieces where she has curtly snapped off lines about how the social norms are being upset. Who are the leads?
