Film Viewing Journal 2008-Today 2012-12-15T22:33:58-07:00 Jeffrey Overstreet

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

The Looking Closer Film Viewing Journal is open for business.

This is the post where I’ll catalog most of the movies I see.

(Want to take a trip down my moviegoing memory lane? Here are past film-viewing journals for 2007, 2006, and 2005.)

Oh, so you noticed the ratings, did you? You’re probably thinking, “But I thought he criticized the process of giving stars and number-ratings to movies in this rant at Filmwell!” Good point. But these letter-grades do not represent my permanent judgment of the films’ artistry, moral characters, or “recommendability.” They’re a personal note, a tenuous measurement of my enthusiasm for the film after that particular viewing. They do not concern whether or not I’d recommend the film. I don’t intend for LookingCloser.org to be a “Consumer Reports” for movies, but something more like a travel journal where we share our various experiences and insights on film. My recommendations will differ depending on a person’s interests, experiences, sensitivities, and age just as if I was recommending food or drink… so I avoid making blanket statements about movies.

Okay, let the record-keeping begin…

*= indicates first-time viewing.
>=indicates I’ve reviewed the film

(About as hypocritical and disingenuous as superhero movies get. While its characters lament the corruption and excesses of a lust-driven culture, the film serves up extra helpings of gratuitous gore and soft-porn sex to dazzle the fanboys. Philosophically, the film does strike some resonant chords about the meaningless of life if there is no God (or at least no loving God), but the film is so “steroidal” in its sensual overload that it subverts what discussion-worthy material can be found there.)
