Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Today I attended church and the Pastor spoke on REST. It spoke volumes to me and my husband on our work ethic and how we feel that “no days off” will somehow prove to God our obedience. So imagine how we felt when Pastor David Winston of Living Word Christian Center in Oak Park IL burst our bubble when he in fact told us we are doing the opposite. In fact, he stated that this fast-paced and demanding world, finding time for rest and self-care has become more crucial than ever. As believers, we can draw inspiration from the Bible, which not only emphasizes the importance of rest but also provides guidance on how to incorporate it into our lives. In this article, I will explore the biblical perspective on rest and its significance in nurturing our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Additionally, we will discuss how the upcoming anthology, “Waiting Room Surgery for the Soul,” curated by myself, aligns with the theme of rest and self-care. Let’s get into the topic and discover the restful life that awaits us.
The Biblical Basis of Rest
Rest is not merely a physical necessity; it is a spiritual discipline that God encourages us to practice. In the book of Genesis, we read that after creating the world in six days, God Himself rested on the seventh day, setting a precedent for us to follow (Genesis 2:2-3).
This divine act of rest establishes the sanctity of taking time to rejuvenate and recharge. Moreover, in the Psalms, we find numerous references to finding rest in God, such as in Psalm 62:1, where it says, “My soul finds rest in God alone.” This indicates that true rest is not found in worldly pursuits but in surrendering ourselves to God’s care and provision.
Rest as a Form of Self-Care
In a society that glorifies busyness and productivity, prioritizing rest may seem counterintuitive. However, by neglecting rest, we risk burnout, anxiety, and a deterioration of our overall well-being. Jesus Himself recognized the importance of rest and withdrawal. In Mark 6:31, He said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
This demonstrates that even in the midst of His ministry, Jesus valued the need for solitude and rejuvenation. By following His example, we can find a balance between our responsibilities and our own self-care, leading to improved physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Waiting Room Surgery for the Soul:
Listen Linda’s upcoming anthology, “Waiting Room Surgery for the Soul,” explores the concept of rest and self-care. The anthology, set to be released in June 2024, goes into various personal stories, reflections, and insights from 7 powerhouse individuals who have experienced the transformative power of rest and waiting on God in their own lives. Through these narratives, readers will gain practical wisdom and encouragement to embrace rest as a vital component of self-care and spiritual growth. The anthology serves as a timely reminder that rest is not a luxury but a necessity for a healthy and fulfilled life.
What does Linda think?
As we consider the importance of rest and its biblical foundation, as the vessel (visionary) behind Listen Linda, here is my perspective. I believe that rest is not only a gift we give ourselves but also an act of trust and surrender to God.
“When we allow ourselves to rest, we acknowledge our dependence on God’s provision, wisdom, and guidance. In the stillness, we find clarity, strength, and renewed purpose.” I encourage readers to embrace rest as an intentional practice, knowing that it aligns with God’s design for our well-being.
In a world that constantly demands our attention and energy, rest is a precious gift we can give ourselves. By embracing the biblical principles of rest and self-care, we can experience a deeper connection with God and find true rejuvenation for our souls.
As we eagerly anticipate the release of the anthology, “Waiting Room Surgery for the Soul,” let us remember that rest is not a passive activity but an intentional choice that leads to wholeness and spiritual growth. May we all find peace in the restful embrace of our loving Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ.
