**Faith & Fundraising: Insights from Dr. Janell Harvey**
Welcome to another edition of Listen Linda Speaks! I’m thrilled to be back after a refreshing break, ready to share some inspiring conversations centered around faith, perseverance, and community support. The other day, I had a heartfelt discussion with the incredible Dr. Janell Harvey, who shed light on the transformative power of our minds and the potential within us all.
In our conversation, we tackled a pressing question: How do we break free from the fears and self-imposed boundaries that often hold us back? Dr. Harvey emphasizes that overcoming these obstacles begins with recognizing the importance of support and courage. Together, we explored how faith can be a driving force in taking those crucial steps toward achieving our goals. Inspired by Jeremiah 29:11, we are reminded that God’s plans for us are greater than we can imagine.
One of the key topics we discussed was fundraising—a challenge many face, especially those just starting out. Dr. Harvey offered practical advice for those who feel overwhelmed. She suggested finding a mentor and connecting with professional organizations like the Grant Professional Association or the Association of Certified Fundraising Executives.
These resources provide invaluable insights and guidance for newcomers in the field. Additionally, social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook can help individuals connect with seasoned professionals who are eager to share their knowledge.
Building trust with donors is another vital aspect of fundraising that Dr. Harvey highlights. When applying for grants, there are specific guidelines to follow, much like a school assignment. However, when seeking support from individuals, it’s essential to cultivate relationships first. Dr. Harvey emphasizes that fundraising is fundamentally about “friend raising.”
Dr Harvey advised that potential donors should experience your organization through events, updates, and shared successes before a financial request is made. It’s all about creating a foundation of trust and understanding.
Throughout our conversation, Dr. Harvey pointed out that many people make the mistake of rushing into requests without first establishing a connection. She shared a relatable analogy: imagine someone you don’t know suddenly asking for help or support. It’s natural to feel hesitant.
Building relationships takes time, and it’s crucial to engage with people genuinely. This reciprocity is key—before asking for assistance, show interest in what others are doing. Support their work, like their posts, and share their successes. This mutual exchange fosters a stronger community and opens doors for collaboration.
In closing, Dr. Harvey and I encourage you to embrace your potential and take steps toward your dreams, both in faith and fundraising. Remember, each connection you make is a stepping stone toward achieving greatness, and with God’s guidance, you’re destined for incredible things.
Stay tuned for more uplifting conversations, and let’s continue to inspire one another on this journey of faith and empowerment!

About Dr Janell Harvey
Dr. Janell Harvey's career in fundraising and nonprofit management appears to be rooted in a combination of her academic background, professional experiences, and personal faith. After a successful tenure as a professor of marketing, where she likely developed strong skills in strategic planning and community engagement, she transitioned into the field of fund development in 2002. This shift suggests a desire to apply her expertise in marketing to a realm where it could make a meaningful social impact. Her involvement with the Grants Professional Association and her role on their executive board as treasurer indicate a deep commitment to the field and a desire to enhance her understanding of fundraising dynamics. This professional engagement would have further equipped her with the knowledge and networks necessary to excel in fund development. As the sole proprietor of Harvey NPO Consulting Group, she has been able to channel her passion for helping organizations secure funding into training and consulting, enabling her to impact a wide range of nonprofit organizations, ministries, and schools across the country. Her work is clearly driven by a mission to ensure that these entities can sustain their operations and fulfill their missions. Moreover, her strong faith, as evidenced by her active role in her church and her favorite scripture from Philippians, likely inspires her work and provides a framework for her approach to fundraising. This blend of academic knowledge, practical experience, and personal conviction has shaped her career, allowing her to make significant contributions to the nonprofit sector while remaining grounded in her values.
