When the News is A Call to Action: Top Catholic Tweets for 3/27/15

Last updated on: March 27, 2015 at 12:57 pm   By Lisa M. Hendey

As always, the news of the week leads me into prayer. There is something about these waning days of Lent which has my heart aligned so fully with those who are suffering and in pain. I recall as a young girl that at our Catholic school we used a Stations of the Cross booklet which shared pictures and stories of children in challenging situations around the world. One particular photo showed a young Mexican orphan girl, standing amidst the rubble... Read more

From Vatican Radio today, a beautiful outreach to the poor of Rome. I have personally never had the chance to experience the Sistine Chapel, but it makes my heart smile to know that the Vatican will welcome 150 souls to have that special treat. The Office of Papal Charities has organized a special visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel for a group of 150 homeless people. On Thursday, March 26th, through the initiative of the Papal Almoner... Read more

Last updated on: March 24, 2015 at 11:50 am   By Lisa M. Hendey

CNA has a great recap today of Archbishop Auza’s recent addresses at the United Nations on the occasion of International Woman’s Day. His remarks centered largely around the Feminine Genius in the effort to protect and uplift women’s right and equality: The feminine genius, Archbishop Auza said, is linked deeply to “solidarity in caring for the vulnerable and in creating a better world.” While governments are tasked with ensuring a just society and the respect of all persons’ rights, “some... Read more

We Can’t Neglect the Call for Prayer Amidst ISIS Religious Persecutions

Last updated on: March 24, 2015 at 11:31 am   By Lisa M. Hendey

Perhaps you were like me: you missed watching this video on 60 Minutes Sunday night: More than 125,000 of Iraq’s Christians have been forced to flee the homeland they have lived in for nearly 2,000 years because of ISIS violence and threats. Lara Logan reports. We’re reminded by the USCCB that we each need to be persistently praying for an end to this horrendous situation. It’s easy to turn away from this situation, which feels so insurmountably challenging. Videos like... Read more

Last updated on: March 23, 2015 at 2:56 pm   By Lisa M. Hendey

From yesterday’s Angelus prayer: Pope Francis offers pocket Gospels from the hands of the neediest As he did last year during Lent, the Pope offered all those present a pocket-sized Gospel, which was distributed by some homeless people who live in Rome. “Here we see a beautiful gesture”, he remarked. “Those ones most in need are the ones who give us the Word of God. Take this Gospel; keep it with you and read it often, every day. Carry it... Read more

Is It STILL Lent? Top Catholic Tweets for 3/20/15

Last updated on: March 20, 2015 at 1:57 pm   By Lisa M. Hendey

How is your Lent going? Mine seems interminable. Although this Lenten season has been filled with amazing blessings, there are some days when it feels as though the season will never end. When I have days like that, I try to unite my tiny, tiny “sufferings” with Christ, asking God to help me grow more Christlike in my words, deeds and thoughts. Pope Francis’ tweet from St. Patrick’s day gives me hope in the moments when things feel hopeless: Let... Read more
