California Catholic Conference Blogs on AB1266 Transgender Students Issue 2015-03-12T16:49:31-07:00 Lisa M. Hendey

With legislation pending in California relating to the treatment of transgender students in California schools, the California Catholic Conference has a blog post by Judy Barrett which speaks to this issue. From Ms. Barrett’s post:

If signed into law by the governor, AB 1266 will require public schools to allow a child of any age “to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”

Please take a moment today to read this post in its entirety and to educate yourself on this issue, regardless of whether or not you live in California. The Conference’s action alert on this issue recommends:

Local school administrators working with the student’s parents and family can better meet the needs of an individual student undergoing gender confusion or gender transition than a politically correct, “one size fits all” law applicable to all students.  Subsidiarity—allowing decisions to be made at the level closest to the problem—makes sense in addressing real needs.

I believe it is critical that we average Catholics in the pews educate ourselves on these topics so that we can be prepared to accurately and sensitively communicate the true teachings of our bishops with our family and friends.
