Venerable Fulton Sheen with Bishop Schlarman, early 1930’s

Courtesy of the blog of the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation today comes rare video footage of Venerable Fulton from the early 1930’s.

Per the video’s Youtube description:

Fr. Fulton Sheen returned home from his continued studies overseas and received a warm welcome as featured guest in the early 1930’s and attends Mass with Bishop Schlarman at the Guardian Angel Home (orphanage), Peoria, IL, USA

Sadly, the video is silent, but perhaps this gives us even more impetus to take in visually the signs of those times. Additionally, I must say that I loved the moments around the 4:37 mark where Fr. Fulton is called forward to speak. His greeting to the Bishop, his glance at his watch (something I think ALL Catholic speakers do! or at least this one…) and the warm reception from the crowd somehow humanize this amazing man who will soon be a canonized saint, God willing.
