Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

This image is from the only procession that takes place on Easter Sunday in Seville, Spain concluding a week-long series of processions to commemorate Holy Week. Seville may be one of the most beautiful places in the world to spend Holy Week. The most powerful procession I witnessed began at around midnight on Good Friday at the Church of El Senor del Gran Poder [Lord of Great Power], patron of the city. After hundreds of penitents left the church, finally... Read more

Dives in Misericordia

I have always preferred a more traditional architecture for new churches. Before leaving Rome though, after four years of being surrounded by ancient, medieval, renaissance and baroque churches, I decided to visit the God Merciful Father Parish, or the Millennium Church, at the Roman suburb of Tor Tre Teste. It was a long journey. The 100-minute trip took two bus rides and one trolley ride across the city. The church sits amidst suburban apartment buildings and stores. Completed in 2003,... Read more

Beautiful Remarks
Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:26 pm By Father Pablo Migone
When we gaze at something beautiful, there is a yearning that hurts inside of us. It hurts because we long to possess the beauty we see, to make it our own, yet we know we cannot. Eventually our gaze must move on and we are left hollow, without the beautiful object. We are left hollow, yearning for more. How much is enough time to gaze at something beautiful? When is it appropriate to move on when you cannot get enough?... Read more

Lachrimae Amantis
Last updated on: June 3, 2009 at 9:43 am By Father Pablo Migone
This is a beautiful 16th century Spanish poem by Lope de Vega Carpio, translated by Geoffrey Hill. The title means “Tears of the Lover.” I recently had to comment on it in a theology exam. The poem is about a soul distant from God, living in the cold darkness, yet God continues to seek this soul every night hoping He will be allowed to enter it. The soul does not understand why God should love it so much and its... Read more

Rome
Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:25 pm By Father Pablo Migone
I have been back in Rome for about one week and have kept very busy with conferences, registration, and preparing for diaconate ordination on October 9th. I’ve also had to do more mundane things such as cleaning my room and doing laundry. Basilica of Saint Peter viewed from the Tiber River The Pontifical North American College Saturday night I made a Profession of Faith and took an Oath of Fidelity to the Church, which are required for all... Styr River
Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:23 pm By Father Pablo Migone
These two pictures are on the bank of the Styr River in Ukraine, south of Lviv (Львів). I consider them both among the best pictures I’ve taken. They both capture a glimpse of everyday, simple life in a village on a Sunday afternoon after Church. The first one is of one of my students carrying a watermelon from the village store to the river. My whole class ate it while sitting on an old wooden suspension bridge. The second one... Read more

Flannery O’Connor in Milledgeville
Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:22 pm By Father Pablo Migone
I took a short trip to Milledgeville to visit the house of one of my favorite writers, Flannery O’Connor. After being diagnosed with lupus at a young age in 1951, she returned to her native Georgia to live the rest of her days with her mother at their farmhouse Andalusia outside Milledgeville. She died in 1964. Andalusia was a functioning dairy farm where Flannery kept peacocks and wrote almost all her fiction work after1951. You can imagine her walking around... Read more

The Hound of Heaven
Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:21 pm By Father Pablo Migone
The title for my blog is inspired by the late 19th century English Catholic poet Francis Thompson. His greatest work, “The Hound of Heaven,” expresses his search for happiness in the world, which he cannot find. Through the toil and pain of his search, God is there offering his unconditional love for him, chasing him like a hound. A heavenly hound. A hound of heaven. Thompson begins his quest by running away from God: I fled Him, down the nights... Read more
