Giving Thanks

Last updated on: October 10, 2010 at 4:34 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Doesn’t it happen often that we perform a good deed or a nice thing for another person and we don’t even get a thank you? We often feel a bit annoyed, sometimes even upset. Sometimes we expect a thank you note, and it never comes. One that happens quite a bit is when one holds the door open for someone coming into a building. The person doesn’t even recognize the kind action. Perhaps it’s because the lady expected the gentleman... Read more

Decisions

Last updated on: September 19, 2010 at 7:13 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[The first homily I ever gave at my home parish, Saint Mary on the Hill in Augusta, GA during my 10th year high school reunion] In 1989 my family came to Augusta on vacation, we still lived in Peru. My parents had come here many times before since we had family living in the area, but 1989 was the first time I came along, I was seven years old. I remember coming to Mass here at Saint Marys when we... Read more

Free Will

Last updated on: September 1, 2010 at 2:11 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[from my parish bulletin] Two Sundays ago I visited the youth group to answer questions they had prepared beforehand. There were so many good questions that I only got through a handful of them. I didn’t get a chance to answer the question I thought was the most thought-provoking, so I decided to answer it here. The question goes like this: “If God is all-knowing, why didn’t he stop Eve from eating the fruit? He seemed to be oblivious to... Read more

Humility

Last updated on: August 29, 2010 at 4:05 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[Homily for the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, cycle C] Humility is a word that gets tossed around quite a bit, and we hear it in today’s readings, we hear it straight from our Lord’s mouth. A person may be described as humble, but so may someone’s house. We’ve heard it, “he has a very humble house, very simple, without much in it.” Sometimes when someone is meek or quiet, they are described as humble, but also people who have... Read more

Ave Crux Spes Nostra

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:33 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I think that sometimes it seems as if the world is conspiring against us and absolutely nothing goes right for us… or at least things don’t go the way we’d like. Every single one of our efforts fails or goes unnoticed, things get more complicated, and things get darker and darker. When you think things can’t get any worse, they do they worse. I encountered a man not long ago struggling to keep the faith – a good man who... Read more

Saint Lawrence

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:33 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

[Written for the parish bulletin. The image is from the fresco behind the altar of San Lorenzo in Panisperna Church in Rome] Today, August 10th, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr. In the year 258 the Roman Emperor Valerian led a persecution of Christian leaders putting to death Pope Sixtus II along with his seven deacon assistants, Saint Lawrence among them. As deacon he was in charge of the temporal goods of the Church and... Read more

Faith: The realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen

Last updated on: August 8, 2010 at 10:37 am   By Father Pablo Migone

Much has been written and said throughout the centuries about the faith of Abraham, our father in faith. Yet I sometimes think we don’t talk enough about Abraham. Out of all the people in the world, God chose and called Abraham from the darkness and made a promise to him that is still valid today about 4,000 years later: God promised Abraham that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the... Read more

Washington Memories

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:34 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Today I took a road trip to Washington, Georgia in Wilkes County. It’s a beautiful southern town incorporated in 1790. The first stop was Saint Joseph Catholic Church where I was confirmed in September, 1995. I hadn’t been inside the church since 1995. While inside the small church, I began to wonder how different life was in 1995. Things were on a different track then. Everything changed in a split second. We left Washington in 1995 and literally never returned.... Read more

Postmodernism – Our Present Worldview

Last updated on: July 13, 2010 at 10:22 am   By Father Pablo Migone

I wrote this summary of Postmodernism about one year ago. After studying it in a seminar, I attended the well-known musical Wicked and immediately recognized postmodern elements in it. It made me wonder if the popularity of Wicked is only due to its music, or perhaps because people identify with its Postmodern message. I hope to write a reflection on this later. For now, here is my summary of Postmodernism. Postmodernism may be identified as a movement or attitude in... Read more

Good Samaritan Sunday

Last updated on: July 10, 2010 at 4:00 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Doesn’t it feel good to be ‘nice’ to other people? Have you ever wondered though why we are nice to other people to begin with? I once read an influential scientists’ explanation for it. He wrote that being nice to others was a remnant of evolution. Back in the day when early humans lived in large family clans, they had to look out for each in order to preserve the family genes. For the sake of the survival of the... Read more
