Ecuador Boat Ride

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:36 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

I remembered this morning I had these pictures of the boat ride I spoke about in my Christmas homily (look at previous post). We boarded at Muisne and sailed down the Muisne River (first picture) onto the Pacific Ocean. You can see me on the boat on the left wearing a straw hat and a white t-shirt. We arrived at Cabo San Fernando and walked onto shore (second picture). I had an amazing lunch cooked by the nicest lady (you... Read more

Merry Christmas

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:37 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Five years ago I went on a medical mission trip to Ecuador in South America as a translator. One of the villages we visited was reached easiest by sea, so we boarded a small wooden vessel, too small to officially consider a boat, and ventured out into the unforgiving waves the Pacific Ocean. This was the scariest roller coaster ride of my life, up and down, left and right and the ocean right beneath me. As we approached the... Read more

Mexican Baroque: Manuel de Sumaya

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:37 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Very few people are aware today of Latin American sacred music, particularly the baroque music which was widespread in colonial times. One of the baroque masters of Mexico was Manuel de Sumaya, a contemporary of Bach and Handel, who became the chapel master of the Cathedral of Mexico City in 1715. The majestic organ of the cathedral was completed in 1736 (pictured above) and was heavily used along with other favorite baroque instruments. In 1738 Sumaya left for the... Read more

Faith in Europe?

Last updated on: December 20, 2010 at 6:50 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Many faithful Catholics wonder what has happened to the faith in Western Europe. The answer certainly is not cut and dry, especially because there are still many faithful and ardent Catholics throughout the continent. Yet one can certainly speak of numerous historical events that have slowly fractured the relationship between the Church and Europeans. Some years ago I read the book Good-bye to All That by the English World War I soldier Robert Graves. Graves’ biography gives us a glimpse... Read more

Salvador Dali

Last updated on: December 16, 2010 at 9:34 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Today I visited the Salvador Dali exhibit at the High Museum of Atlanta. I enjoyed seeing two of Dali’s most famous paintings, The Persistence of Memory and Christ of Saint John of the Cross. Dali named this painting The Persistence of Memory because he believed once one saw it, it’d be almost impossible to forget. I was surprised because it was very small. I learned Dali first painted the landscape and didn’t know what subject to draw. One evening after... Read more

Beautiful Celebration

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:38 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

This year at my parish we celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe for four days, imitating the four days Our Lady appeared to Saint Juan Diego from December 9th to the 12th in 1531. We began December 9th with confessions and a Mass for the Feast of Saint Juan Diego. On December 10th the Juan XXIII Movement organized a retreat for the whole community. On Saturday we began at 7pm with the blessing of the new Danza Azteca of the parish... Read more

Homilia para la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:38 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Read more

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Last updated on: December 12, 2010 at 7:57 am   By Father Pablo Migone

[Written for my parish bulletin last year] This weekend in Mexico City, over three million people will gather for the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the location where almost 500 years ago Our Lady appeared to a poor and humble boy, Juan Diego. The apparitions took place between December 9th and 12th of 1531. They not only fueled millions of conversions from the indigenous population of Mexico, but continue today as a foundational block of the faith of... Read more

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Last updated on: March 25, 2016 at 3:38 pm   By Father Pablo Migone

Preparations for the festivities of Our Lady of Guadalupe are well underway at my parish. This afternoon I went to the radio for an interview, it went very well. The schedule is packed, starting on December 9th with a Mass on the Feast of Saint Juan Diego and ending with Mass on December 12th followed by a procession and festivities. It is customary to celebrate each day from the 9th to the 12th because Mary appeared each of those... Read more
